Default Might be a silly question

I'm just watching some rallying on TV and it made me wonder what was the advantage of fitting 2 suspension units per rear corner to the RS200 and also the F40?

There must be a very good reason for it but I can't think what that advantage was/is Anyone know or got any thoughts?

I remember reading somewhere that it was purely because back then there wasnt anything on the market that was strong enough in single damper form so Boreham decided to use 2 purely for reliability, sure I will be corrected if wrong though.

Maybe to stop them overheating by giving each 1/2 the load ?, maybe one acted on bump, the other acted on rebound ?
