Are we ruining our cars ??
I was at work today and i was talking to the decorator about the ford escorts i then said i had a rs turbo, he began to go on about how the xr3i is a much better car ect ect..... but we where rudely interrupted by another co worker who said that I'm ruining my car by changing the management and putting after market engine parts on it.
Personally i love the look of the escort when it standard and i dont plan on changing much to the outside apart for putting other ford wheels on it.
But my question is are we ruining our cars buy modifying them or are we just turning a good car into a great car ???

More expensive to maintain them as standard than modify even lightly over time...long as there are no chump valves, badboy bonnets or gaping bumpers it's fair game IMO

One person will say you're spoiling it, one will say you're improving it, the other one wont give a toss, it's all down to individual opinion.

If only independant management was around back when the rs turbo's were still available to buy, would have saved me plenty of blow ups, fueling headaches etc.
so in a way its the best thing that has ever been developed for the rs turbo along with steel rods!

I dont see a problem with changing engine bits... Nothing wrong with upgrading with newer technology.
The only thing I dont/wont do, is put after market bodykits, halford special items on a car. The only thing I would change is a set of wheels. The interior should remain standard imho.

In the eyes of the average man on the street, yes, we are ruining our cars, wasting our money and generally being very stupid indeed.
But then I consider someone who spends thousands on a horse to be very silly. The same could be said for someone who buys a fridge costing several thousand... or a buyer of pricey antiques, or someone who wears really expensive suits, or spends fortune at a restaurant.. etc
Basically, it's your money to do with as you wish. Just because others don't approve, doesn't make it wrong.

Ive got the same opinion as everyone else so far but I was pretty regular in the local ford parts dept, and I used to get moaned at by a couple of the guys there for having (non chav) aftermarket kit on my RS's.

I'm always getting slagged off by different people about my car saying that I'm ruining it, wasting my money, what's the point, you're a moron for doing that, blah blah blah.............!
Everytime I go round my mates house and his gf's dad is round it's always something along the lines of 'you still got that fucking piece of shit? Why are you bothering with it and wasting your money? It's fucking stupid!!! By yourself a decent car like an E type Jag, proper motor that will earn you money!!!'
I don't want an E type Jag, I don't like the damn things so why would I buy one?!! As for earning money, that's why I have a job!!! It's my hobby and I enjoy it and at least I have something to show for 'wasting my money' rather than pissing it up the wall!
It would be boring if all cars were exactly the same. At the end of the day the majority of the cars we own are mass produced therefore built to a certain budget. IMO all we are doing when we modify our cars are improving the areas where the manufacturers fit parts 'that will do the job' so to speak and also to make our cars our own.
They're our cars and we can do as we feel fit with them!!

they dont have to be a waste of money. they dont depreciate for a start. as long as you buy the right one and sell it when the time comes they will cost you nothing ! thats what i do and thats the gods honest truth.
as long as its only a toy not an everyday car.
ive just added up with 2 rs turbos and 5 cosworth including all mechanical bills but not tyres/tax/insurance ive broken even give or take Ł500. around 20k miles between them. thats the whole beauty of it for me no depreciation, infact with my last cos made 2k profit from breaking it which more than covered the loss of the previous rough saff i had

depends... I think i have ruined my 205... as a road car, its not very nice at all now
too stiff, too low, too noisy, only 1 spare seat lol and a roll cage that keeps getting in the way....
however, on track the thing is really quite good fun to drive! and quite a lot better than the standard car!
so really its what you want it for.

were saving the plannet buy not buying new
ask them if they decorate their house. if they do tell them thats modifying it and ruining it
also, tell them they're very boring and aren't unique with their own personality.
i like to be different, fuck everyone else :P

I'm restoring my Saff to original condition. I even contemplated using the stock bushings.
I'd love a completely standard car but with just a stage III kit. That's my goal. But one thing the hot rod and "numbers matching" hot rod crowd has taught me over here is that if you upgrade a part you keep the original one.. How many 500s out there don't have the original wheels, intercooler etc any more?
There is a totally standard Saff in my town for sale. 19k on it. Museum stored. Good price too. Totally standard including AirCon. I'd be scared to drive it since it's in such great condition.
You only ruin it if you drill a crappy hole in it and don't rust proof the hole. You ruin it when you sell the standard part. However, ruined cars are often better than non ruined.
