an internet question for you geniuses to ponder over the weekend
right then, currently we all get our internet down a phoneline yes?
well, most of us do anyway
but what got me thinking was my sky box, if it can download a hd film to be shown on my telly AND record another HD film AT THE SAME TIME, it's got to be capable of downloading a shit lot of stuff for just your common chap with a computer in the living room yes?
so why don't they send the internet over the airwaves? you can do it with an iphone and stuff, so why are we stuck in the wired world and not gone wireless?
you can even get batteries that are charged wirelessly now so why the big hold up?
or is it because bt want to charge us for digging up the road?

I get my internet through cablevision. I can also get internet wirelessly here in Canada at 21mbps.
Internet over phone lines (adsl and dialup) is the slowest way here in Canada. So yes, wireless is easily done but the infrastructure isn't there globally.

What pacwest said about infrastructure, plus rolling it out on the scale your on about would be massive + teething problems + updating everybodies hardware + technology thats not quite there yet (range, reliability etc etc) = hassle + cost.
fibre optic is the way forward for now, even system busses will go that way in the not too distant future.

Fibre is the way forward, IMO we should be aiming at 1Gbit by 2015 to the home. Theres no reason this cant be started now and the tech is out there.
Back this up with wimax/other across towns and linking rural areas in.

Internet over satalie to your home is nothing new. Think a company called europeonline offer it, albeit a shitty version.
http://www.europeonline.com/
The problem is while you can get fairly impressive Download speeds, the Upload is shite.
When you look at the speed they quote and think, i get better, just remember that you have line contention to deal with. What they say IS what you get.
More geared towards those who can't get broadband.
Not for me though, Fook that carry on.

how do these dongle things work? my sister who has no broadband or cable/sky tv buys a Ł15 top up per month and her daughter uses it for internet connection on her lap top. where does the signal come from?

Dojj I've heard Sky will be implementing this, don't know when though. The next thing from Sky is going to be 3D, I've had a sneak preview of this and it's pretty cool - TV sets are gonna cost a bit though.

Cost is why not. They'd rather keep charging us for 'normal' phoneline internet for as long as possible. Remember, they're going to have to update everything if they changed to wireless, which wont be cheap, and would possibly mean downtime for customers.

I think you're referring to WiMAX. i.e. using wireless as the medium for the 'last mile' instead of someone digging your path up and making a poor job of laying a cable from your local exhange (POP) into your house.
When ISP Pipex was up for sale a couple of years ago, Sky were sniffing around it as Pipex had made big investments in WiMAX. This deal didn't go through and I'm not sure what Sky are up to in this space any more.
A general description of it is here -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WiMAX

The uk is way behind in terms of bandwitdth to the home
Fibre is the future but it's going to take time to upgrade
Im not convinced by wifi over large space's
Even in the office environment most are still installing cat6 and fibre with a few AP's for roaming visitors..........
