Default Vauhall 2.0 16v ecotec, any good?

Hi all, What's the ecotec like for tuning, is it different to the XE ,are the mounts in the same place? what sort of power will it give on cams and carbs etc?The reason why is I was gonna put an XE in my RWD fiesta, but I've got a good Ecotec 2.0 16v in my garage.

the Ecotec is no comparison to the XE... on paper it should be similar, but in practice it isn't close..
I've recently got a 99 Astra SRi 2.0 as a daily runner and i gotta say it's pretty dissapointing in performance terms - 140bhp in an astra should be quite reasonable... but

The Ecotec is no comparison against the XE, not as strong and doesn't put out anywhere near as much power etc. Standard XE de-cat runs 156bhp which doesn't sound much of a difference from the 140bhp cat Ecotec but believe me it makes a huge difference - I have a workshop full of both (ask Nath!) in kit form so if you need any bits for your XE just shout! De-limit the XE and see what happens!! I believe the XE head had some influence/development by Cosworth as well so that gives you a clue

I told you to buy my GSI Rich but you didn't listen

That's what happens as you get older I guess - you don't care anymore

Hmm, let's see, a set of cams, race manifold/exhaust, twin 40's etc. delimit - hee hee a wolf in sheeps clothing and a rebuild every 1000 miles including three gearbox changes lol

what were GM actually thinking with the Ecotec?? What "benefit" was it supposed to provide over the XE as a successor???

I agree, they may have got the emissions down but the MPG is crap. The other half has an '02 Astra 1.8 SRi which is dreadful on fuel and she's not heavy footed at all. We weren't impressed with it so are changing it in the new year for something that at least offers some power for such poor MPG

Oh, in answer to your question Andy, no the mounts aren't in the same place. The Ecotec has a stabiliser/mounts which which you have to take off to change the aux.belt. Another pain in the rear end idea by GM! Same as trying to change leads/dizzy on the V6 with a distributor that sits underneath the bulkhead
