Vauhall 2.0 16v ecotec, any good?

Hi all, What's the ecotec like for tuning, is it different to the XE ,are the mounts in the same place? what sort of power will it give on cams and carbs etc?The reason why is I was gonna put an XE in my RWD fiesta, but I've got a good Ecotec 2.0 16v in my garage.
Andy

Not good then Tony, oh , and I know it was you who told me to go XE anyway! But this Ecotec is sat there all lonely on its own.

NUTS RuS 30-12-2004 05:14 PM

Sell it and buy some plug leads for the XE with the money ;)

Red16 30-12-2004 05:17 PM

Fit a XE. Rick

richm 30-12-2004 07:47 PM

the Ecotec is no comparison to the XE... on paper it should be similar, but in practice it isn't close.. :(
I've recently got a 99 Astra SRi 2.0 as a daily runner and i gotta say it's pretty dissapointing in performance terms - 140bhp in an astra should be quite reasonable... but :cry2:

Rudey 30-12-2004 07:57 PM

ecotecs are poo twokers wouldnt go near em

Dragon 30-12-2004 08:15 PM

The Ecotec is no comparison against the XE, not as strong and doesn't put out anywhere near as much power etc. Standard XE de-cat runs 156bhp which doesn't sound much of a difference from the 140bhp cat Ecotec but believe me it makes a huge difference - I have a workshop full of both (ask Nath!) in kit form so if you need any bits for your XE just shout! De-limit the XE and see what happens!! I believe the XE head had some influence/development by Cosworth as well so that gives you a clue :DD:

I told you to buy my GSI Rich but you didn't listen :content: :D

Having said that, for what you gave on your SRi I'm surprised you can sleep at night you thief!!

Anonymous 30-12-2004 10:09 PM

ecotec blocks are good the heads are pants though.

richm 30-12-2004 10:14 PM

what were GM actually thinking with the Ecotec?? What "benefit" was it supposed to provide over the XE as a successor??? :?

Anonymous 30-12-2004 10:15 PM

better emissions, certainly wasnt a performance thing

richm 30-12-2004 10:25 PM

certainly wasn't a fuel economy thing either...

emissions and economy arent always the same thing

Dragon 31-12-2004 07:15 AM

I agree, they may have got the emissions down but the MPG is crap. The other half has an '02 Astra 1.8 SRi which is dreadful on fuel and she's not heavy footed at all. We weren't impressed with it so are changing it in the new year for something that at least offers some power for such poor MPG

Dragon 31-12-2004 07:23 AM

Oh, in answer to your question Andy, no the mounts aren't in the same place. The Ecotec has a stabiliser/mounts which which you have to take off to change the aux.belt. Another pain in the rear end idea by GM! Same as trying to change leads/dizzy on the V6 with a distributor that sits underneath the bulkhead :?

andyescos 01-01-2005 04:46 PM

cheers for the above lads, looks like it's an XE for me then!
