Sounds like it could be detting from your description. I'd be careful driving it around, also what fuel are you using?

is there any way of telling for sure what it is??

what could it be caused by?
underfuelling?
pretty sure the timing is ok, as the engine idles fine, and behaves
perfectly normally, dont seem/feel to be down on power.

any ideas would be great cheers!

no mate, it dont do it in neutral i dont think.
it also dont do it if you load the engine at lower RPMs

just at the 4000 RPM mark.

sadly not mate,
only happens when im driving.

thing is.
engine had new rings and bottom end bearings 12,000 miles ago
lol
but this noise has only started very recently, as ive only just noticed it,
and i've often got the window open!

(and No, its not so the chavs can hear the stereo lol )

That makes it difficult to diagnose then. So you cant tell if the noise is coming from the top or bottom. Ticking will be top, clonking will be bottom

umm, its kind of between the two i guess. lol

a definite rattle, as if the engine is being really heavily loaded..
its not a clonk, and its not a tapping either lol

so i guess that spells rings!? but they aint that old!
