Not good

Mate of mine had a 2nd hand Imprezza arrive on a pallet and as soon as it was fitted it was knocking its tits off. Thankfully the supplier honoured the exchange as it wasn't a cheap engine at the time

the rate puma engines are going into fiestas means this will be a short lived business if thats all you do anyway. the engines in good nick are getting rarer by the day and the prices will continue to go up to a point where its not an economically viable way of getting 125bhp.

The original engines stopped production back in 2001 and new stock is long gone so its only a matter of time as the miles run up. Shame they cant be easily rebuilt.

combine conversions with breaking pumas, loads of cheapies out there and more money to be made on the parts too and you get to run the car 1st

you charged over 1000 for a simple conversion so i would think you wont be out of pocket swapping lumps just inconvenience

Why are they so hard to rebuild?

And fair play mike for sorting it out, even though it is not your fault at all .. That is the sort of customer service that builds a shit hot reputation.

How is the customer about it? Is he blaming you or just fucked off cos the engine has gone pop?

wil they are designed to be throw away units. theres no affordable off the shelf bearings etc for the 1.7. Sure there were bearings available for the rally cars etc but everything was hideously expensive and already based on a sleeved down to 1.6 block.

It is possible to rebuild them but its not cheap. For a start you cant rebore them without having a nikasil liner redone which aint cheap, and going for steel liners aint cheap either!!

pound for bhp it cant be far off being cheaper to drop in a duratec I4 these days.

anywhere from £300 to a grand for a really low miles one. although youd want one dressed with the inlet manifold at least as thats unique to the 1.7. Maybe a bit less if your trade though. most second hand units youd want to change the cam belt as a lot dont get done.

People ask even more silly money for racing puma engine parts

Puma parts generally have always been expensive. A lot of scrappys seem to forget that its ultimately a fiesta in drag. Seen some numptys asking for £100 per headlight second hand. fuck that

yeah but it can be done and isnt thaaat bad really, its just that until the last couple of years no one had wanted to invest the time and effort in doing it right. A bit like in the old days even basic zetec conversions on fiesta turbos were pricey where as its cheaper now.

puma engines can vary wildly from this dreamer:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ford-KA-engine...item25576d5820
£1499

all the way to stuff like this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-PUMA-1-7-...item3a54f1bbfe
which if as good as it says could be a good buy but still over £300 by the time youve done the cambelt and tensioner to be safe.

Its a bit hit and miss.

Then you get complete moron dreamers like this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ford-Puma-1-7-...item4835db519b
£200 just for the crank get te fuck!!

and insane nutters like this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/FORD-PUMA-1-7-...item1c0dfc6619
what drugs was he on????

especially considering you can get the whole FRP engine for £1700!!
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Ford-Racing-Pu...item2303ceb7ae

pumas and especially FRPs are worth shit loads more in pieces. Bit like cossies really but slower

I aint read every bit of this but it sounds like shit luck like some of the above have said but some thing i will say is that the engine may had oil in it when you looked at it but what about 24 hours before ??? what you have to remember is that most people would like something for nothing and some people are more ruthless than others, if/ when you convert another car either get a warrented engine or let them supply it ( lay down some ground rules), i have a puma 1.7 as a run around car and its done 140k and it gets a hinding very often and touch wood it still pulls good, its ok people driving cars hard but they do need respect to ie warm it up first and so on

meet the owner halfway, get him to supply a replacement and you fit it

Worth a try?
