1 in 10 operations performed needs further surgery after as it doesnt go to plan.
1 in 1000 operations performed is classed as a catastrophic failure and leads to permendant damage including partial blindness.
Luck is definately involved!

edit: maybe its the skeptic in me, but when i see offers of Ł395 per eye, i get the impression that a bloke from a 3rd world country is doing the operation!

totally agree I was thinking about getting this done but opted for monthly wear contacts instead less chance of something going wrong that could affect my sight for ever

Had mine done end of June with Optimax (Finchley Road Surgery) and can 150% Reccomend it.
Yes obviously there is Risk, but there is Risk with everything in life, its your choice whether take that risk.
The Risks in the laser eye procedure are minimal but had them pointed out to me on my consultation.
I paid a smidge over Ł3k, but it will vary for everyone, as there are many procedures and depends what is available for you to have depedent on how bad your eyes are and what kind of Treatment you wish to go for.
when they say Ł395 per eye, i asked about this, and it will only be that price if your border line past 20/20 if you want to keep having it done every 3-5 years i guess.
I was in the chair for 12 Minutes, Both eyes
Yes, there is alot of Pain for the 1st day, but thats expected, they give you so many eye drops to fight the pain tho and as long as you do what they say after the op, then all will be fine.

Right then, it is six hours since I had them done! Still a bit sore, and to be honest stung like fuck after the anasthetic wore off. Easiest way to describe it is like getting shampoo in your eyes, no worse than that really. Now, there is a bit of discomfort, but no pain as such, so can't complain really.
I went with ultralase, the first company in the uk and the one that has done most procedures, and to be fair the surgeon was spot on, been doing it for over 10 years with 22 years of opthalmy under his belt! There is a small risk, but with my lifestyle I have a high chance of being bumped off at some point anyway, so fuck it might as well try it
My prescription was -11.75, which is mega blind lol, so they said the 1st correction was 85-90% chance of perfect correction, and if it isn't 100% then they will do any more procedures free, and that carrys a lifetime care promise as well.
I paid Ł3400 all in, expensive but as someone has said, IMHO you get what you pay for, so again can't complain.
So, all seems good at the moment, will report back tomorrow after my check up

Indeed, but I wanted really nice glasses lol. I am blind as a bat, and wanted uberthin lenses, which is rather pricey, and the frames were expensive this time, they are not always, just depends on which ones I like, I tend not to worry about the cost of glasses, it bothers me having to wear them, so I may as well make sure I am as happy as I can be with them.
Also thinking about it, that Ł700 did include my sunglasses, which were a couple hundred.

To be fair 666, that sounds like complete bollocks to me! There is NO way any government is going to let doctors loose on peoples eyes without reliable, certified equiptment, same way that NO doctor/surgeon is going to risk his career or reputation or patients sight with a 60% chance of success! The figures chip quotes are a bit far fetched as well, more like 1:100000 of a big problem, and 1:1000 for small complications....
The other point of interest is that there are only 54 royal college of surgeons approved to do laser eye correction in the uk, so it is well regulated!
I wouldn't have had mine done without being totally confident in the outcome, yes there are (small) risks involved, but there is in every surgical procedure, and IMHO it is like getting on a plane. You know there is a tiny % chance you might crash and burn, but the risk is FAR outweighed by the rewards!

The figures I quoted were real figures, but are for a few years ago, perhaps things have improved since to be ten times less of a risk like you say.
Thankfully I dont need glasses yet anyway, but when I do I will certainly consider laser correction instead.
Id still want one eye done at a time just in case, its just such an important thing to risk.

Chip, there are a couple of new techniques now, you might have seen the words lasek and LASIK... LASIK is the most up to date one, and it uses a computer controlled laser to cut the flap that gets lifted up, rarther than lasek that uses a surgeon with a scalpal. This means there is far less chance of error or infection, hence why they are so happy to do both eyes at once.
I will keep this thread updated, but so far I can't complain at all!

theres been a lot of case's of people being let blind or with worse sight due to the treatment, but people will chose to beleve what thay want when it comes to rates of suckses/ failer
quote from bbc news
Consumer experts have warned that patients undergoing laser eye surgery are not being told about the risks they could be taking with their sight.
Laser surgery, which can cost thousands of pounds, is increasingly popular.
But the investigation by Health Which? also reveals any doctor can carry out the treatment after just a few days of training - they do not need a specialist qualification.

When you say lots of cases, you have to compare that figure to the total number of corrections performed. If it is 10 cases in 100 procedures, then that would be high. If it's 100 cases in 1,000,000 procedures then it is a small %!
Do you fly at all? As there is a fair number of crashes, same as driving.
