1 4x4 3door was built and tested in 1989 at Boreham, ford motorsport wanted to retain the whale tail for rallying but to due to the shell of the mk1 now being out of date and despite Karmann making xr4ti's and thus being able to make mk1's and willing to take on the work management where having none of it so they had to make do with using the sapphire.

So unless your mates 4x4 has reg D373 TAR then its not something ford ever made.

I thought one of the 1st 4x4 Fords they did themselves was this :

I know before that Phil Price had a 4x4 Mk3 which was built before Ford ever done anything 4x4 but I'm unsure of what year that was.

no no RS500s where made as standard 4wd

I think fords first foray into 4wd cars was the massey ferguson and ford joint project and I think the 4x4 rallycross mk1 capris could be wrong though

I believe its a prototype 4x4 Cosworth Escort, I may of got the pic from on here ages ago I can't really remember but it was one of a few development cars they built.

I said one of the first but I guess the RS200 came before that but I believe it was the first front engined 4x4 they built, shame there isn't more info on it as it was probably a impressive car and with only subtle body mods a bit of a sleeper !

As confirmed regarding the RS500 4x4 i think most info regarding them is known by the owners club.

The car above is very interesting i think this is in the Ford book i got for xmas last year, would have been mental in production and look what wheels it was wearing

wounder why people with the rs500 cars had them converted, scared of crashing them with being 2wd or big power no grip etc..

must not of been thinking right when they got this done lol.

i prefere the 4x4. its fun to have 2wd aswel but 4x4 is faster on a b-road, or a tight track and especialy in the wet.

The RS500 was a homologation special and doesn't have the half moons in the chassis rails to accomodate the front drive shafts. Surely modifying the shell with these would then require an additional 500 units for homologation.

Or am I way wide of the mark?

The piccie is from 1988, it is totally sierra floorpan(shortened to suit the std/ish rst body), with sierra cossie yb and 4wd running gear.
Left is John Wheeler(engineer) and on the right is Mike Moreton(product planner).
There is also a in line 6 cylinder YB engine, and 1 acropolis escort in existence, as ford sold it off, but removed the signage.
