Shift locking!?

Shift locking!?
i was reading fast ford, as you do, and reading ades drift sierra project it said something about shift locking.
now im presuming that it means changing down a gear fast so that the back wheels lock up!?
am i right, and if i am how does it lock up?

exactly that in rwd.
say your second gear max speed is 60mph and you change from 3rd to second at 70 it will lock the rear wheels momentarily.
in a fwd car it will over rev the engine lol

Kind of but not quite!
Nothing actually to do with rev limit.... and if you did like your example at 70mph when 60mph was the redline in that gear you would probably end up with valves firing through your bonnet
Rev limiters don't protect against mechanical over revving after all...
I generally shift lock from 3rd to 2nd at 50mph and 4th to 3rd at 80mph....
It momentarily shocks the wheels to a much lower speed and therefore breaks traction.....
A similar effect to yanking on a hydraulic handbrake but much cooler, more difficult and cheaper
Also do it too much and standard MT75 mounts break!
Some gratuitous shift locking with my new Chizfab gearbox mounts

can't you do this without hitting the limiter though i thought it was all to do with the gearbox trying to spin the engine up quickly but locking up slightly due to the drag involved , i no you have to be hovering around the redline but just not over it, thats how it was with all my bikes i'v only had fwd cars so can't comment there but it must be same principle.

ade, did you ever see our old drift shitter?
that got plenty of shift lock action at teeside, but it was very wet and slippery.
i cant actually remember the gear speeds, that was just an example i gave

I can't get enough of mine.... back up to Crail this sunday
PS, Not knocking your speeds, just that it's not actually to do with the rev limiter

i didnt say it was, i said in gear speeds.
so if you are going faster in say 3rd than 2nd can do and shift down, it will lock the wheels.
but in a fwd car it will more than likely bend valves. that was the only reference to a rev limit.

But if you're changing down at faster than what the lower gear can cope with you will by definition be over the redline.... Ideal situation is to change down into the redline.
Also FWD won't be more likely to damage anything... just that you'll loose some traction up front instead.... which is a bit pointless

works well in empty tranny pickups you dont even need to be anywhere near the rev limiter, just as you are turning in, drop it a gear, foot away from the throttle, and dump the clutch, then as you feel it slide slightly, smash the throttle pedal and slide into the nearest hedge
