I wouldn't wear on going around the "ring" first time,I would like eye's everywhere in a helmet your restricted view isn't much cop lol.
I understand there used for safety but at the same i can look after the car,I just wanna make sure where everyone is

He didnt lift mate, if you watch it again and listen carefully you can hear the engine note change as its swinging about.
The reason for the crash was a loose rear beam bolt, he never stood a chance at catching it even though he didnt everything right IMHO, as the beam was moving on the car.
When I drove Ian's car the day before I was convinced that something was loose at the back but I think cause he had been driving it as it became loose he hadnt noticed the change as it was gradual, we even jacked it up in the hotel car park to have a quick look at it after I said I thought something was loose but we were only on a little jack and couldnt really get it up high enough to look at properly so didnt manage to find it, he only found out about it when he was next working on the car.
With regards to the barrier, he was quite lucky he didnt get charged more, it actually moved one of the posts back a litle, but I covered up the witness mark before the guy from the ring arrived
I'll see if I have got the picture of the barrier that I took, as Ian mentions it was clearly dented.
I bet they still havent replaced it though they hardly ever do it seems, they charge you for the slightest impact and then dont bother to replace it till someone has a bigger crash there, they charged me to replace barrier I hit and yet 18 months later I could still see the mark I had caused, bet it will be the same if we go back this year and look at ians barrier, lol

So what bolt was loose then ??

IIRC it was the main beam mounting bolt mate, but Ian can confirm or deny that, we'd put the jack under that bit of the beam to put it up in the air if I remember right, so in doing so would have stopped outselves getting access to that one annoyingly.
We jacked it up, gave it a good wiggle on the wheel to see if anything wanted to move, and it didnt, so tried the other side and it didnt either, so we both assumed I was wrong about something being loose.
Guess next time I get a feeling something is loose on someone elses car I will bother to check every single nut and bolt in case im right again

Well that's clearly common sense. If people want to be naiive enough to avoid wearing safety gear on the most dangerous road surface in Europe because its seen as some stupid trend, then be it on their heads. Personally, I'd be compelled to wear one driving anything with the capability of doing over a ton on surfaces resembling a roller coaster.

You're totally correct about it being safer though im sure, although I would argue that really you need a neck collar too, I never wear a crashhelmet without one these days, as the crash helmet alone can really increase the chance of nasty whiplash, I bet me and Ian would have both been hurting far more in the crash we had if we were wearing a lid and no neck brace than with nothing.

50/50 chance, although he lost it a little you know it could have been worse at those speeds. Never mind though, turned out to be a possitive move on his part, finally went for the RS kit he secretly wanted anyway.
And he gets a rare Nurburgring Bill to frame Dude!

Woah there mate, you've read too much into that, I drove the car and said I felt something was loose, Ian didnt think it felt any different to normal though when he drove it, as is often the case when something works loose and you are driving the car its such a gradual change that you dont notice it when you are driving.
We jacked it up and checked what we could with the limited resources we had available, and everything we pulled and push on felt normal so we both just assumed I was mistaken.
As the only thing he had telling him it was loose, was some bloke who had never driven the car before and he could find no evidence to support what I was saying and it still felt ok to him, I dont think he had any reason to believe me.
No good bitching at him about how he should have done something different as im sure he is aware of that now, but at the time he had no reason to believe there was anything up with it, so didnt know he was taking a risk!

Sounds like you guys came off lightly and it could of been alot more worse!

Unlucky, was very close to saving it. Can I ask though did you brake on the final spin? Just the way it suddenly spun out despite it looking like you'd saved it makes it look so.
Unlucky on the Bill, I'd have been tempted just to drive off and see if I could get away with it, or do they have cameras and marshals everywhere?

quite clearly shows on the video he did
lucky and unlucky at the same time .... i imagine the shorter wheelbase doesnt help with correcting it when it steps out
can i ask if you have a quick rack on the focus ???? may of helped if you had
just proves why its manly owning a 2wd and why they need utmost respect whilst driving

yer i did brake at the last minute but if you look at the video we were fastly approaching the turning point for the next corner which if it was still unsettled on the corner the crash could of been a lot worse

Thought you'd like to relive the moment
Here's the bill for those wondering about the costs, as you can see they don't just charge for the small amount of barrier, but all associated costs too:
And to add to the pleasure of the bill, Ian had this to fix too:
So moral of the story is don't crash at the Ring
At least the car's looking better than ever, and you being the sound guy that you are can have a laugh about it now, and keep us entertained too
