If you can clear the mortgage, then I'd be tempted to do that in your position.

buy 2 houses on buy to let, there are some nice cheap ones about now on most buy to lets you need about 30% down.

then just wait for the house prices to rise once they do take the colatural and buy another and just keep going.

That's a life-changing amount of money. Please do as much research as you can and speak to people who could possibly invest it for you. Imagine doubling it... that would be even better for your girlfriend and kid in the future.

You could even buy a flat for e.g., now that property prices are at a low level, and either let it out for a constant income, or just renovate somewhere in need of TLC, let it out for a few years and then sell it when property prices have risen for a decent profit(having had a few years constant income from the rent).

Sound advise

Failing that I'd buy 75,000 lottery tickets

Buy to let is good advise imo and try and invest as much as you can.Like you say if you are in a good job you will not miss the amount you have been so generously left.Seen it before from one of my freinds was left a house, money wasted on cars and tbph I did the same but was about 25k when I sold my house.Take it from experiance I would do things differently now.Live for the future for you and your family and not now like I did.Ask yourself this,do you want to work yourself untill retirement age or get the time off earlier and still have an income from otherpeople paying you to live in propertys you own.Everything is as cheap as atm.

Personally Id take 15k out for yourself to do with as you please.

The other £60k you need to invest it, buy a house, put it in an account with the best interest rate you can and forget about it or something along those lines.

Take it from me you WILL spend it if you dont put it somewhere. I did exactly that, spent £30k without realising where it went. Its VERY easy to do if you dont keep a close check on things!!!! Fortunately I realised what I was doing and have now reigned it in big time. Still have cash in bank and in cars and bikes tho. I caught it before it was too late.
