Default Banks - Are they all as bad as each other?

Well...

I've completely and utterly had enough of my current bank

I've got everything with them and yet they simply can't be arsed to talk to me... I've filed complaints against them to head office and someone will call me from a withheld number, i'll explain its not convenient to talk, they'll arrange a time to call me back and never bother...

A month after having my card cloned and lots of money taken out - it's still not sorted

Everyone is very quick to put me through to someone else on the phone, but it's not their department so they need to put me through to someone else... etc.

Soooo... I'm thinking about closing everything i have with them (personal bank account, student bank account, business bank account, ISA, two savings accounts, credit card, pension and sharedealing account) and going elsewhere.

Anyone got any GOOD recommendations or are they all actually as bad as other?

For service you could try Barclays, they're my stockbroker and I've always found them to be in a different class customer service wise. Can't comment on their banking, but imagine the service will be along the same lines.

Whats ever you do DO NOT bank with Abbey or Aliance and leicester, they are THE worst banks on the planet. Trust me, A&L cost me Ł1050 for something that was their fault, long story but they are total shit

to be honest they are all the same as they are only interested in making money and to be frank your average personal customer doesnt make the bank that much in the big scheme of things so they know that to piss off a few customers doesnt really matter.

people still need bank accounts in this society (unless your a benefit scrounging scumbag who has no money of course).

banking is like car insurance in that respect, they can and will continue to get away with cutting back on service as they know we need it.

Just have to look at how if youve got a basic/student/cardcash account then a lot of banks you cant even use the counter service as your a worthless customer.

Barclays are widely known to be very close to the bottom with regards customer service (and most other aspects of banking too).
HSBC have always been excellent with me.

I've never had a problem with Barclays. Had an account with them since I was about 10 I think.

My girlfriend used to be with Abbey but after doing 7 credit searches on here when trying to open a new account for her she thought enough was enough and came and joined me at Barclays and got some sexy additions to her bank account.

thing is with all "products" or "industrys" where we the customer "need" them then they can do what they want and get away with it!!

Other industrys poor customer service leads to going bust when people use the competitor, sadly with banks they are all the same.

Will;

i worked for Nationwide Building Society for 10 years, i can honestly say that their values are geared towards looking after your interests.

Being a mutal society they dont have shareholders to look after etc.

this is going to sound cheesey but every employee has a set of behaviours which they must adhere too (called PRIDE), and its very strict. Customers really are well looked after; and their complaints procedure is also extreamly good and well managed.

i left Nationwide back in August, but anyone looking for financial services wont go far wrong with Nationwide.

Matt

First Direct is amazing. You ring up, there's none of this "press 1 for this press 2 for that", a person speaks to you and it's 24 hour and they are nice people and do everything efficiently.

If you fancy trying their phone number to see how long it takes them to answer and check their phone manner 08456 100100

I suspect both of them are breaking the law then!!

if youve cancelled direct debits/standing orders and withdrawn your permission for AOL to take money then the only way they can legally take your money is through taking you to court.

Cheers guys - still no phone call back today - as far as i'm concerned they've had their chance. Saddens me as i've been with them over half my life and i used to work for them!

Char1ie - interestingly its first direct i've had the most recommendations to from people outside of the forum...

HSBC are not alot better, they're crippling me with charges and wont help me out. Absolute bollocks. i've tried reasoning with them, pleading with them and shouting at them and nothing has worked, the halifax however have done me proud so far, they've been pleasent on the phone and always stayed in contace when i'm going overdrawn, the HSBC just used to send me a letter for Ł39 saying i'd reached my overdraft limit and the next time i depsosited money it would be deducted
