Default Engine rebuild on Escort Cosworth

A friend has just discovered his bottom end is in need of a rebuild,he has been quoted £3000 just wondering what people have paid to have their engine rebuilt to standrd spec eg hes only running stage 1,
can anyone recommened any good company's in essex.
Also would he be better of buying the parts as he works at ford and then asking them to do the work,as i thought it would be cheaper that way?
any comments or suggestions
thanks

You could probably do it cheaper(DIY ), but it depends on the state of the ancillary parts. If I were rebuilding I'd also be using new oil and water pumps etc. I would have thought his discount would help alot though. Get the company who has quoted to list everything they intend to do/replace for the £3K assuming a straight forward rebuild. This will only be ballpark though as you never know what you'll find when it comes apart. Also is the £3k drive in-drive out?

What is wrong with it to suggest it needs a rebuild anyway, who diagnosed it?. How many miles has it done and has it been maintained properly?, as a stage 1 engine shouldn't get all that stressed.

I think Grove are in essex and have a good rep. Or he could go further north, up to SCS at peterborough, or west london to MA Developments in maidenhead.

Gt him to ring around an get some other quotes

Edied to say, I've just seen Rob from SCC is on here now, so there's another garage to take it to who will give a no-bull, top service. I hope the cheque is in the post Rob

3k seems a lot for a bottom end freshen up if nothing is actually broken!

New bearings, rings, oil pump, gaskets. They shouldn't even have to take the head off or the engine out of the car!

But then I might be wrong!

think they'll have to take the head off to get the pistons out to change the rings and engine has to come out the bottom of the car on an Escos,
£3000 may sound alot BUT in a garage you'll be surprised how quick that could get gobbled up

rough prices for some parts rings £150 oil pump £150 head set £200(depending on what one) mains and b/ends, head skim, oil and filter and the labour charged the list could go on I'm afraid.

3k dont sounds out of this world if the person who is doing it is checking everything over!

when it is appart i would think about having lower compression pistons fitted, just incase me might wanna go for a big power raise in the future

BIGBAL

i wonder what oil you are putting in yours at £4 including the filter

I know your probably making the point of COSSIE TAX which to a degree i understand

However the parts for cossies are very expensive and the garages that work on them with any degree of skill aren't cheap

Bear in mind ford std labour charge is around £48 an hour
Lexus Labour is £102 an HOUR

Then the hours charged at around £40 by cossie specialists aren't too bad

I think the engine in and out alone on a 4x4 books at about 5-6 hours so theres £300

and dont forget mr VAT taking almost £600 of that £3k rebuild

i would get a second opinion from Grove Garage , SCC , SCS or any other "specialist" before work commences

and i would agree that a standard rebuild should cost less than that

nige was talking about the filter

stus labour charges aint even 40 quid a hour and steve scotts is very cheep too

i was pointing out that 3 grand for a freshen up with a few parts is a bit ott and was stating that it was prob more that just a freshen up

ya can get the parts for a freshen up for less than a grand ( bottom end that is)

600 quid labour , parts and vat aint 3 grand

Why would they need to skim the head has it overheated?
dont just skim for the sake of it..
I would advise him to use a specialist, will be a good selling point in the future also.

BIGBAL

good point on the filter

However the point i was making is that if it costs £3k a wedge of that funnily enough around 17.5% will be going to the VAT man

The remaining £2400 will be bits and bobs and labour

As pointed out many times by others we all agree that £3k for a "freshen" is steep

i paid around that with LOTS of extras including pistons , turbo etc

Depends on if you want it done properly or not, for 3 grand i would bloody well hope you were going to get stuff like the bearing tunnel measured to a very close tolerance and then the tunnel line-bored etc, and everything spot on, bores that dont go thinner at any point, all that sort of stuff that 99% of engine rebuilds dont include cuase its too expensive, the general term used for a correct build such as this is a "blueprinted" engine, dont confuse this with one that is just reassembled with the blatantly broken bits replaced.

Saying "how much should a rebuild cost" is like saying

"I want to buy a new car and ive been quoted 14,000 is that a good price"

All depends on weather its an S class merc, a ford focus or a kia pride really.

Same with rebuilds, they are NOT all the same, not by a million miles.

try STEVE SCOTT FROM A1 RALLY SPORT,

he is near bedford and will allways do a good rebuild at a fair price,

best bet is get some recomendations for the garage you chose,

for 3k i would want a new block!

cosse engines are not rocket engineering,

old design, just make sure the garage does lots of them, they should know whot they are doing.

Just have a quick look thru an advert in Fast Ford Or Performance Ford mags...... that'll give you a rough idea on parts and prices.... then wack the labour on and that'll give you an idea on the FULL cost.

Parts.

Oil pump
Water pump
Big end bearing
Main Bearings
Thrust washers
Piston/ring set (std comp)
FULL gasket set inc Grp A head gasket

£1200

Machine work.

Rebore
16 valves recut and reseated
Head skim
Crank regrind

£350

Plus.....

Antifreeze, Oil and oil filter, labour for engine removal, stripping, rebuilding and refitting......

£1000-£1200

This is NOT a a 100% price that we'd charge as i'm at home and haven't got the full details/prices, all i've done is had a flick thru 2 adverts in Fast Ford Magazine and had a guesitmate on labour...

does that include pistons or just piston rings ???

Antifreeze, Oil and oil filter
thats still gonna be about 40 quid

so in total a full engine rebuild to as much as stage 3 spec for less than 3 grand

bottom end rebuild by a unknow place ( as its not been mentioned yet) for 3 grand

heres a hint for ya ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

OK guys thanks for all the reply's
would rather not mention the garage at this point but my mate has talked to people who have had work done there and had no complaints of yet,as said they only use genuine motorcraft parts, thats the price he's been quoted and includes new chip and set up to stage 1 as running on superchip at moment, and its a small turbo escort cossie,
