Ok, been messing with cars now for 7 years, and I still dont fucking know what this Gunship business is all about... all I can think about is Apache helicopters when people talk about it.
Someone in a nut shell tell me wtf it is?

If its an off the shelf chip then you can't really describe it as a live map.
£400 is quite steep for blowing a PROM and then driving round the block to check the fueling.

yeah what is all this gunship stuff (trade name obviously but...)???
Is it an off the shelf chip or a live map???
If its a live map then i cant possibly see how a live map from NMS will be any better than a live map from say SCS, MSD or any other good mapper?? If two mappers are at the top of thier tree and given two identical engines with identical demands from the customer then id expect them to end up the same.

It's a live map and it was summat Karl/NMS started doing quite a few years ago. I think the basic idea was to maximise performance without changing too many components. Obviously the engine needed to be in good condition but apart from that, you could get great figures using standard turbo and injectors.
It works by throwing loads of boost in at the lower end of the rev range, then gradually tailing off the boost as the revs raise and the injectors start to max out.
At the time most cars running standard injectors would have 'stage 1' chips, with about a bar of boost and somewhere around 260bhp with a similar torque figure.
The gunship managed to get much larger torque figures, more power and a much better mid range kick using the same parts. ( 300bhp ish with 320lb/ft)

You can buy it as an off the shelf chip or have NMS live map it to your car/setup.

we do a conversion that does exactly the same and have done for years lol, a bit of clever playing with the boost control
my only concern has been doing this on std injectors that are 20 years old, taking them to over 90% duty can be a tad risky imo,but if they are in good order should be fine
glad your happy pete
how long before you want a bit more power and then a bit more
im tempted to buy something to play with, but i know i just wont be able to leave it alone

Explained perfectly Martin...
Mine,s running"""
803s rather than the Yellows,
Stage 2 T3.48 with 360 Thrust Bearing
-31 Actuator
3bar
AP 6 Paddle
Group A HG
L6 ECU
Bla bla...
The car is peaking @ 27psi then dropping to 24psi through mid-range to eventually tail off to 18psi @ the Limiter to HOPEFULLY help Turbo life span...

I believe that was one of Karls initial concerns but there has never been one fail that I'm aware of. Good quality parts fitted by ford didn't think that existed lol

I,ve had a few chips fitted and the hunting, cold starts were horrid, maybe my bad luck i don,t know.
ALOT of of the shelves chips run quite rich too, yes i know, better than running lean.
I just prefer the live map over just fitting the chip so to speak, just my opinion.
Hope that helps..

What happened to leaving this standard then pete??
Karl told me it could be 2 months or 2 years for my turbo when he live mapped mine and unfortunately my luck was bad - hope yours is better!

So if you need your car tuning and your happy with the work previously carried out why would you be of less inteligence than a monkey to Re use your favorite tuner .what would you do have a go at mapping it yourself . And I'm sure you know that buying an off the shelf chip it isn't going to be optomized to your engine unless you sprinkle some fairy dust on it that sets the fuel pressure ,boost pressure, makes sure all your sensors are Reading correctly, your fuel pump has the correct voltage and I'm sure a few other things as well.I'm sure that the average bloke on here which you say are less inteligent than a monkey are happy to have a good reputable tuner to work on there car .

It takes 30 seconds to either check the FPR has not been tampered with or re adjust the static pressure to your specification. Then check the amal valve is as your specification.
Take car for drive and check fuelling. You can tell pretty quickly if the FPR is set right just by the idle AFR. Check all fuelling and general drive.
If all ok, job done.
Now how much is a gunship chip? £150?
How much is his labour rate? £50 ph?
So that is 5 hours to fit a chip and check the fuelling. Even if you checked all the sensor resistances and the fuel pump voltage it would only add 10 mins max to the job.
Have any of you actually performed these jobs before to have actual experience of how long they take???

[QUOTE=Garage19;4492575]If Karl is as good as you say he is then his off the shelf chip for a given specification should be fairly spot on. Without re writing the chip the only other variables you have that can be adjusted to change it are the fuel pressure to effectivly scale the fuel map and the boost control.

No because I work in IT and NMS work on cars, i'm pretty sure they don't have a clue what "i" do so would pay the £750 day rate to have work done by me and hence why I would pay them to work on my car as i haven't a clue what they do....isn't that what being in business is all about??

[QUOTE=Garage19;4492575]If Karl is as good as you say[quote]
Yes he is as good as I make out .Karl will take the car out and run the car up in ALL the gears as even a generic off the shelf chip will have certain areas within the map that will need optimising to get the map absolutly spot on as every single engine has lead a very different life . As said you pay peanuts you get what you get. I for one would not use say a place called garage 19 that sounds like it's inbetween council garages 18-20 where as I would use Karl NMS as they have been praised soany times on here the fact that they may be a little dearer which I'm sure there not is of little consiquence when I know the job will be done correctly and my pride and joy won't be waiting for the RAC. I DO know how long it takes to do these checks when done right I was doing it when you were shitting green.
