Dissapointed in the E39 M5, am I mad or missing the point?
Been looking very seriously at getting an E39 M5, and I had a test drive in one today. The MAFS have been done very recently, and the vanos seems to work as described by the test Stu put up on another post....
I have to say, I was quite dissapointed in it, , was lovelly and torquey, comfy and easy to drive, and felt very tight, but it just didn't seem to really go all that well for a 400Bhp car .. Don't get me wrong, as a package it seems great, but just lacks any drama/excitement ...One thing that I did notice is that you can really feel the weight of the car driving it, is really odd, as the chassis is nimble, but hefty at the same time.
Am I missing the point?
Wish I had never been in fast cossies before
Might go and have a look at a few more, or maybe an E46 M3?

Superb cars for the money but i would much rather be in an AMG than an M car

Think you might have expected to much from it
I think they are an awesome car and something i'll own someday but some people do get carried away when they start talking about how good they are

they get there very quickly!
and in comfort!
and to make things even better, at no point do you think somethings going to fall off, or think its about to blow up
and you could brake as hard as you could at 186, with your hands off the steering wheel, and pull up nice and straight!

they are a much bigger car than any cossie so will always drive different. Most cossie drivers spend time and money making thier car as nimble and chuckable and aggressive as possible so of course something like an M5 will seem boring.
Theres no doubting the performance of an M5, high speed, good handling, good comfort and no drama. If thats what you want then fine. if not......
Its a 5 series, its a big massive saloon car!!!

M cars will never feel boom and bust like an old turbo, but the M5 is a great all round drivers car. Maybe you just want another Cossie?

IMO the only M5 to have that is VERY quick(and looks half decent) is the E90 M5.
I've been in numerous E39 M5's and they just seem like a fat lardy well built and quickish saloon....that also these days seem to be driven by(and this is my opinion) people that didn't stand a chance of even renting one back when it was new,let alone them purchasing one......
At the end of the day,a cossie gave you an everyday useable car with supercar(in the day)performance at an affordable price, the M5 just didn't do that....so why would people compare? Maybe because its just that the cossie still holds a decent value compared to its original list price unlike the M5...so these two cars have come into comparison wars/debates due to thier value brackets...but each to thier own as they say!

I have to admit after reading all the stuff on here about how good they are I was let down when I drove one slightly. Very good car and yes pulled great and couldn't really fault it but I think I just expected too much after all the talk of how good they are.
Same goes for E46 M3 in my opinion, I was seriously let down after driving one of them because I loved them until I did....

Im glad someone else pointed out what Ive often wondered about the M5, i just expected too much i think, when you think 400bhp you think " fuck this will be fast" but it just doesnt pan out like that , I would love one these days to put little heidi in the back and do my running about in but i just know i would look at it after 4 weeks and think"god this is shit"!
So i`ll probably end up with one next yr now Ive said that lol
