was around before the p1.
they are a superb car out of the box-very puchy due to short gearing.

BUT a lot of them suffer from engine failure once imported into the uk.
i bought one fresh from import,paid very good money for it and it was mint with no engine mods and coilovers.i did less than 100 miles of relatively easy driving before it began to knock......it was done under warranty-no 3 big end failure-always the problem apparently.
it was rebuilt with new subaru standard crank and acl bearings,roger clark modified oil pump etc and it lasted more than 100 miles then but i sold it within 1500 miles.

ive heard this story quite a few times with fresh import type r imprezas.

wouldnt buy another without the proof of a decent rebuild

I own one and have done for the last 2 years and it's been the best car I've owned with no prblems so far but maintenance is the key and it can add up over time.

I think the 4 door Classics look wank compared to the 2drs hence why I bought one. Mu car looks just like a P1 unfortunately (it will change a bit over the winter) and I have a couple of mates that own P1s and they all prefer the Type as a drivers car. Shite on the motorway tho, 4k RPM at 80mph in 5th!

Buy one with mega low miles or a good build under it's belt that's been Mapped properly and you won't go wrong. I prefer the V5 onwards looks but my car is a V4 wth V5 bits retro-fitted to it.

Only thing I don't like is the box, I'll probably change to a 6spd at some point as I use my car daily.

It's the other way round, the P1 uses a Jap type r thats then modified by prodrive.

The P1's also suffered from the same engine problems mentioned above, so not just down to mapping and fuel.

Also check how regularly the MAF's been changed and serviced etc.

to be completely honest when i bought the car i knew it had spent a long time on the boat etc so my plan of attack was to run it on very light boost with no hard driving for 100 or so miles to ensure everything was ok with the car.but i began to hear a low engine rumble that very quickly got louder!
i was then going to change the oil/filter and arrange for it to be mapped on uk fuel.i was already using shell optimax even when driving it easy;

sadly it didnt reach 100 miles for its oil change/remap.........

inside the engine was absolutley spotless apart from the wear on no.3 big end where it had worn unbelievably in comparison.

from what i heard there is no exact explaination as to why it happens-some say its down to fuel,some say they suffer as its the cylinder closest to the turbo and pipes which make that cylinder much hotter that also affects the oil..........roger clark reccomended as a definate one of their modified oil pumps and oil modines and recon that they have never had a properly rebuilt engine let go with the same problem once the oil pump was fitted........

and as its already been said-the p1 suffers with a similar problem and thats a uk car from the factory set to run uk fuel...

i would like to hear if anyone has a definate reason as to the no-3 cylinder issue?

a couple of mine when i sold it;

From what i understand regards the cylinder 3 problem, i was told it was something to do with over run.
Seemingly when your on the loud pedal fuel and things being circulated aids in cooling. Once your off the pedal, there is no cooling effect and coupled to being next to the turbo heat builds and BANG. Could be completely wrong though.
Was the P1 based on the V5 ?

This was my one was my 3rd impreza others being a uk turbo and a 320bhp rb5.
The type r is much more hard core very quick capable car but not that nice to drive IMO i like a car to have some level of driver comfort.
Much preferd my escos as an all round package.

Did not look as good when i got it spent a fortune on it then did not really like driving it.
I only liked driving it because it was so quick and i was either gonna end up getting hurt or loosing my licence so i sold it.

After

Engine bay

HKS Hi power silent

mmmm! Brembo's

Before i removed the 1/4 decals

Was a very good looking car and quick with such short gearing and 340bhp and sounded awesome with the equal lenght headers.
Would only do 160mph and thats at 8250rpm LOL!
One of my previous rb5

But would still have this back over any of them.
