Default Nokia N97

Has anyone got this phone
http://www.whatphone.co.uk/Nokia-N97.htm

My contract is up soon and i really like this but ive heard loads of bad things about them.

The mrs was on the phone to orange the other night and they said the N97 has a 80% return rate cause they keep going wrong.

I like my nokia phones and i wanna get another 1 cause they are esay to use.

Im on my 2nd one.The 1st one i had kept freezing and switching itself off, software issues apparently,so it was replaced free of charge. No issues with this one they seem to have resolved the problems.I'd still recommend ONE.

I think mine is awesome. Well it is most of the time! However, Orange are bringing out the I-phone eventually so you might prefer to wait?

i'm on my pre ordered original one. It's a generic hand set not branded to any network and it's been spot on. I've heard that the orange branded phones do give lots of problems which is why i'm glad i bought mine outright. I on orange.

Its mostly the branding that the service provider stick on the phones which make these little annoying things, you can easily de-brand them if you google it.

Not easy to de brand the n97 unlike you "N95 8GB"

1) use a tool call NAVIFIRM to download the v11 firmware set. Igot the EURO 505 black files. Store this somewhere

NAVIFIRM logs onto the Nokia servers and lets you browse all firmwares for all nokia devices for all regions.

2) download jaf tool (version 1.98.62)
Download JAF PKEY Emulator v5.0

3) obtain the newer Jaf (1.98.64) but don't install it, you just need to replace the ini files in the .62 install directory with those from the .64 version, this makes it easier later becasue JAF will then recognise the n97

4) Do the regular product code change (I went from vodafone : 0585262 to euro: 0570817)

Install JAF 1.98.62

Extract JAF PKEY Emulator v5.0 to desktop (will emulate jaf tool box)

connect n97 and select PC Suite mode

Now run JAF PKEY v5.0 and click on the GO button. It will come up with error: box driver not installed, just ok through it.

Select BB5 tab, tick Prod. Manager and then click the service button .Click the Read Values button.

Now you can enter your product code and press the Write Values button.

5) use nokia updater to flash firmware. This will appear to work but the phone will then go into reboot cycle.

6) don't panic it's only a Ł500 phone

7) put the firmware files obtained in 1) above, here: C:\Program Files\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-505\

8) connect you phone and start JAF

9) go to "bb5" tab

select manual flash

click the tab "use ini " and jaf will search for firmware file in your desktop

mark "Dead USB" , "Normal Mode" , "Factory Settings"and press flash

you may have to try power cycling the phone to get it recognised

sit back and pray

AFAIK there are only problems when doing the flash on a uk provided branded phone (i.e. Vodafone ,3, etc)

I like mine apart from the fact i lose signal quite alot in places where i had full signal before! And I find my battery life to be pretty poor.

Oh and for some reason it wont allow me to post a few forums, not sure why and when i connect through wlan it shows the forums in mobile mode!

Mines been spot on too, texting whilst driving isn't easy, and unlocking it to answer a call isn't quick neither. Web browsing is fast, and watching films is much better then on my N95.

I cant stand mine. Worst phone ive had.

Reception is crap, battery life is poor and so many annoying little things that do your head in. Think it'll meet a grim end soon. Couldnt put up with it for another 14 months.

QWERTY keyboard is just a gimmick IMO, unless the phone is used constantly for business like a laptop.

I've not had any personal experience with an N97, but haven't ever heard a good word about it. They tested it on the gadget show a couple of weeks back against an iphone, and the iphone came out on top.

My N96 is by far the worst phone I've ever had, my first one went for repair 3 times, my second one is already on its last legs and its about 6 months old. Its the last time I will ever have an N series phone!

IMO Nokia make very very good basic phones, none of this flippy slidey crap, however when they start to get clever it all goes tits up for them. I loved my old 6300.

When my contract is up for renewal I'm gonna think about weather I want something clever (if so it will be an iphone), or something a bit less techy, then it will be a cheaper nokia that will happily take abuse all day!

By the time I managed to answer half of the calls on the n97 everyone had hung up! There's a real knack to sliding your finger across to answer it if the keylock is on! Also the signal is rubbish!!

Totally agree. Over the years I've had loads of N series... Best one being the N95 and the worst being the N97 followed by the N96!

Gone to a Chrome Nokia 6700 .... Faultless, Fast does what its supposed to do with brilliant build quality.

I have no problems answering calls when its locked! You lot must have retarded finger!

The thing that lets it down the most for me is the reception! Whats the point in having a phone if you cant call anyone because of no signal!

I've seen a lot of bad reviews of the N97 - the one to wait for (apparently) is the N900 that is suppsed to be the iPhone killer but we shall see.

Due out on Monday I think

I always had nokia phones for years, then when the n series phones came out the problems begin. i had an 'n' something (cant remember the model), was nothing but trouble. then got an n95 when the first came out, had 3 replacements in the first month, all sorts of software issues with it, swore id never have another nokia again. had samsung phones since, never had one problem. currently got a tocco ive had for a while, been a great phone, but its getting on and im tempted to get an iphone.

Had mine since release week, bought unbranded direct from Nokia shop.

It was a bitch to start with, very buggy and laggy. Since version 12 software was released its a gem, best phone ive ever had and battery life back up to a couple of days where it should be.

Top Top phone but you MUST update it to get all fixes installed.

Will no doubt be on an N900 soon though so keep your eye out for a bargain N97 on PF soon...

Nokia and symbian phones are on the way out in this day and age. Apple and Android software is where it's at imo. I had an N97 for a few months, enjoyed having it but it's as buggy as hell.

I have got a HTC Hero now atm and it's an awesome bit of kit! It works on Android, they have there own app store with loads of cool widgets and apps, obviously not the same league as the iPhone but it smokes nokia's ovi store.

I forgot about the answer problem... I spent weeks waiting for it to go off and ringing back. Pressing the screen and nothing.

Apparently it's very good. Especially if your into your "social networking".

I'll stick to the hero... Did the rom update on it yesterday and it as fast as hell, zero lag between screens on the phone.

My mate traded in his N95 to get an N97 and tbh i think he wish's he kept the N95.

He has had it under a month and the keylock slider on the side has snapped off which means he has to open it to turn the keylock off which considering the fact the phone takes 10 minutes to do anything on is massivly slow and annoying.

It has alot of great but gimmiky apps and shit on it you will never use and take 20 minutes to find and load lol

At first i was amazed by it, now i really wouldnt be assed with it because it seems complicated and long winded to do anything on it.

On the other end of the scale, mine is fast and being touch screen, I can navigate through it pretty quick. Faster than the N80/95/96 I had previously.
