Check the heaters go hot and cold, easy fix (about Ł18) but worth checking, also throttle cable tends to go a bit stiff, rust around everywhere, wear on steering wheel, boot solenoid sticking, fog lights tend to crack as well as the clips on the front grill. Wicked little motors though, just sold my missus one but she had a good years worth of reliable abuse out of it!!

I've just sold one, excellent little car to be fair. Rear arches rust like mad, as well as most other places, silver top engine has allegedly got a weaker bottom end than the black top, although I never had a problem with mine.

they are a fun car,,, looked at a few as a ruabout, but rust was the main issue. looked at one with 145k, run and drove sweet as a nut,, but arches were gone big time,,

gone for a focus instead

Try to get a phase 2 model for the engine mainly.

I have hear LOTS of people having the lumps go at anything from 50k on the phase ones - silver top engine. Many people say there is no issue, often see them a month later asking what the knocking noise is lol!!

Look out for rust on the arches, doors, boot lid, below the back lights and behind the door rubbers on the shell.

Look out for porridgey springless gear sticks, the spring is in the box and is a box out job to sort.

Pretty good reliable little car and fun for what it is, cheap now also.

ps phase 2 cars have darker trim, boot pop switch, revised engine, different centre caps (smaller) on the alloys and iirc a plastic grill.

Main problems are arches really, as well as sills.

Bottom end issue isn't really a problem providing you keep eye on oil.
