£1800 to spend - st24 or st200?

Just thought I'd update this - struggled to find an ST200 for the budget at this time of year, so have bought a 2000/X-reg ST24 with just over 100k miles. Paid £1250 which may or may not be slightly over the odds, but it is the latest-possible model (so upgraded pump impeller) and in superb condition. Hopefully is a glavanised shell too - the arches seem very very good regardless. Will post pics once I get it cleaned up!

After owning v6 mondeo's for several years and laterly an st 200 for the last 2 I think I can am qualified enough to comment on this lol.
The later water pumps don't have a metal impellor, they are white plastic as opposed to the black plastic of the earlier ones, the later plastic so far doesn't seem to suffer like the earlier ones.
I have had a metal impellor pump on the shelf in my garage for the last 2 years as I haven't seen the need to fit it yet!
one thing to look for on the st200 as opposed to the st24 is the front bottom arms, on the st200 they are unique and very expensive dealer only (or from america if you know where to look
) the st24 has standard ones that cost peanuts.
my st200 has been pretty good over the last couple of years watch for missfires tho at low rpm this is usually plug leads as I recently found out lol
IMRC boxes fail not helped by being cooked ontop of the front cylider head, these can be moved easily to under the battery tray

I test-drove a new ST200 years ago - I think it was the last of them, just as X plates were changing to Y (or maybe Y to 51?)
With my Ford discount the money wasn't an issue, but I couldn't believe how hard the ride was and really didn't like it at all, even for the kind of miles it would do as the "wife's" car.
So I stuck with my Omega 3.0 Elite.

Have a look on pistonheads/ebay/autotrader and see what there is st200 wise at the moment.... There is a nice looking one in Cambridgeshire on ph, but is up at £2300 and too far to travel on the off-chance the seller is desperate!
I agree that 200's should be down at that money - most are over 100k now and ten years old - but the market has been massively distorted by scrappage. That and the new tax rules mean many people (myself included) would rather have an older car than a mk3 v6....

as my sig says i had a st200 and all i can say wot a very nice car . and every one gose onabout the fucking water pumps well if they have lasted this theres fuck all rong with it and the one big thing to check on the st200 is the wish bones as they are on on the st200 and are about £200 EACH and ford only the st24 £25 for 2 so just check them

Yes check before you buy. The ST200 wishbones are the same as the Cougar and different to all other Mondeo models.

hmmm.. ive just caught this thread as im looking around for a smoker.
Was looking at the good old passat estate but the ST200 has certainly caught my eye.

I can't find a pic of an ST200 one, but they're solid so have no 'hole' in the middle and the innermost bushes are horizontal allowing the wishbone to pivot up and down more effectively. Shop around and you can get them for 120 quid, or replace the balljoint for about 40 quid if you can be arsed to drill the huge rivets out.

Fair do's - so presumably there's a different subframe for the st200 vs the 24/other mondeos? Am thinking of polybushing mine as the front feels a little worn - from prices I've found it should be more cost effective than buying new wishbones every year or two!

I have just got a black saloon st24 for £990 a 00 on a x reg with full service history, im the 3rd owner, only done 74k. I was looking at getting a st200 but i couldnt find one with lower miles for the money i was spending.

Id say ST200 also as I've had mine two years and rarely let me down
changed arms on it at cost of a couple hundred iirc and I had the gera box let go as planet gears are shit in these (week point) but fiited a Bara built one and is strong as fook

erm theres a thread on here some where that I wrote in about it.
from memory Dan -
I had a ProDrive R&D Box that was ST200 which was in bits, gearing there but 1000's of bits but all new.
Then also purchased a spare ST200 box which had good casing.
Out the two Bara made a strong new box but needed planet gears uprating so used a 7" diff iirc to rape parts from and machined the MTX casing to fit the cossie bits along siode all new Pro Drive parts.
So ended up with a new one ST gera box strong as fook

No mate no LSD, it isnt a production item of his so no price I can quote, he did it for me as a favour becuase I couldnt find a mint box to replace my fooked one and was also mates rates.

Na didnt cost me as much as much as a Quaife would have as I had the bits lieing around already.

Oh, ok, understood. Just seems a waste to go to all that trouble and aggro for no real benefit if you still had an open diff. You could have just swapped the diff out of the stock box you bought into your box (presuming it wasn't also fucked!!)
