How big bore is the exhaust? Its a powerflow so i doubt if over 2.25" bore, thats not good for the power, powerflow make some shonky ass exhausts...

it looked about 2.75 - 3" the bore from front to back tailpipe is 4"

could this be the problem of the emmisions

No mate, emissions wont be the exhaust, and 2.75-3" should be ok too, power wise.

Im suprised more people hasnt helped as you asking for ENGINE advice when buying somthing with a RST engine in which loadsa people knows!

Main thing with the engine is usual rattles n smoke, they not too complicated so if they dont chuck out any blue smoke, rattle like fuck, blow oilcap off, and pulls properly in every gear, it sounds ok.

What the boost gauge (i presume its got one) show at full boost? With 170bhp im presuming just a stg1 chip so should be running 15-16psi

Steve 15-16psi? a stg1 (well up here) is goose - chip - upped boost (13psi) and a cam, an that on a healthy engine will put out 180bhp (150@wheels)

if ure allowed, take turbo boost hose off, check compressor for play on the shaft, up down/in out a TINY bit is allowed, but more than that and u got a bargaining point
check under oil cap for mayonaise - sign of haedgasket, if also allowed take plugs out check colour, u want a light browny tany colour for a healthy engine, black - oil or overfueling, have a good look over the engine for leaks etc, start it from cold makesure it starts ok, no rattles/dodgy smoke. jus check it over in general like ure servicing it, wheel bearings/tcas, ball joints for play, makesure sills are solid as theyre prone on mk2's along with ought else lol! when test driving go from 3rd - 5th an boost for a bit, then back off, check mirror for puffs of oily smoke, also keep an eye on temps to makesur eit aint prone to overheating or anything. cant think of much more usefull if i do i'll report back

Edit - take oil cap off whilst car is runnign, engine should stall if its on MFI still. if not could be possible piston ring wear. if u still really want it if it dont stall when u take oil cap off get a compression check done, not all mfi engines stall but they should! also makesure oil is getting to the top end of the engine to makeure oil pump is in good order, if oil pump goes the turbo will along with the engine. get an oil pressure guage if u buy the car!! if it has an oil pressure guage dont be alarmed when pressure drops from starting from cold, it does drop as oil gets thinner with heat so less pressure!

chill out mate! most peeps are out getting pissed on there days off

engine wise, check for things that itsmeagain has said first,
make sure when you view it the engines cold and has been started before hand! touch the bonnet or top of the engine to tell this, also when it comes to starting the car, stand behind it and check theres no smoke from the exhaust (be blue or white) also get whoever it is to start it without putting there foot on the throttle.
check that when the cars idleling it stalls when you take the oil cap off.
when you take it for a spin listen for any wining from the turbo (like a police siren), or smoke when it comes on boost, check for signs of a fuked headgasket (creamy liguid in the oil cap) dnt worry if its in the breathers..
you could go more in depth and do compression tests ect... but i think thats a bit to in depth.lol!

hope this helps
