Default BMW 3.0l petrol engine help

My x5 is being a twat.

Couple weeks back it just decided it wouldnt hold idle. Sounds like it might have a leak at the inlet. My mate stripped it down and we found a breather hose that had been taped up at some point as it was burst

Changed that and it still wasn't right. It starts but you need to rev it and it's rough as fuck.

An older wiser man () suggested the air flow sensor so we disconnected it and the car ran and held it's own idle but still rough. We assumed this was the fault. I got a new sensor and fitted it up yesterday and it's still the same

Any other suggestions or common issues?

Can the air flow sensor be tested to check it?
