So I Took My Computer To The Shop To Be Fixed...
The heat sync had came off and I put it in to be fixed. They reloaded windows and what not with the heat sync too and the final bill was £100. Anyway, I collected it and brought it home and installed some software and restarted it. This is when it refused to come on so I took it back to ask advice and it came on in the shop. He said he'd do it again to be sure and this time it never came on. He said he'd keep it in and phone me.
Anyway, he phoned me today and said the Hard Drive is knackered and it's going to be £45. He also said he'd need install Windows again but he would do this for free as I'd paid for it previously.
Should I be paying anymore money? He's claiming I must have knocked it when moving it to and from the house, which isn't the case.
What do you think? Cheers,
Benni.

They certainly milked it, very very simple fix for someone who knows about pc's.
With the hard drive normally if there on the way out they will start to make a clicking sound whilst loading things up or sound louder than normal, or the pc will just seem sluggish or both.
Question for you, did you see/use the pc prior to installing the software(the stuff that stopping it booting) if so and it was working fine then i dout very much that your hard drive was at fault.
P.s its heat sink

Another tip for screwed hard drives(not saying yours is Benni) is to stick them in the freezer i kid you not, normally makes it work long enough to pull your shit off it

as stated if the Hd wasnt working or on its way out, The SMART status of the hd will warn you on the post ( power on self test ) screen ( black n white letters soon as u start up the pc )
Even if u knocked it HDD's nowadays are pretty solid. knowing that it will more than likely cause your windows not to boot rarther than screw your HDD up.
What amazes me is how did he come to the conclusion that the hdd is knackered ?? all in over a day. like i said you would know there and then!
personally your best off getting your pc back and going somewhere else, or get a fellow pc junkie to do it all for ya pending where u live n that.
at least the guy was teling the truth there where he WILL have to resintall windows again .

you will probably find that its something that the shop has done for it not to come back on.. i.e he cuda removed a pci card etc to get the heatsink fixed on due to limited space and not tightend it up properly.
also usally with the pc turning on and then refusing to come on again, its usally a bios issue ( which they cuda done ) Or its loose / faulty hardware causuing the pc to short circuit, thus not booting up.
But ... a HDD will not cause this problem ! a hd will always power up regardless of if it can read/ write etc.

firstly ask what hard drive he is fitting as £45 will get a nice one, then look it up on tinternet and find out how much it really is
45 quid ide drive western digital 320 gig
37 quid sata western digital 500 gig
fitting a heatsink is easy enough , but the question is why it fell off in the first place..

Something is deffo fishy, if the heatsink on the cpu was lose or fallen off then the pc would only boot up for a few seconds then shut down. If the chap in the shop simply put it back on then £100 for a 5 min job is fucking smart business lol. There is no reason to re-install windows at all unless that was fucked before the heatsink issue, and if windows become corrupted, I would expect a phone call to say it's fucked and that it needs to be reinstalled. Not do it and then invoice someone for it. Now, as for the current issue, it's very easy to change a hard drive in a PC and reinstall windows, there's plenty of step by step guides on the net

knocked it killed the hard drive ? i dropped my pc down the fuckin stairs and it still works fine, either it was an old drive, or they're pulling your piss cord benni - for a start even with a knackered drive the pc will still power up - it just won't load..
go in there with your best steel toe capped's on and kick the twat square in the bollox.

Thank's for the advice... I'm not sure what to do now. I'll go in and argue my case with some of the above facts, none about ginger children.
