Don't thank me yet I tried taking one apart a few minutes ago and got as far as the top spring, the cap that holds the insert in place is pretty tough and I don't want to damage anything. Maybe we should take it to Phil's.

have you taken the nut off the bottom of the strut bodie ,turn it upside down and you will see the nut 14mm i think,undo this and the insert will just slip out,

The nuts were not there m8, must have been removed sometime ago. I tried removing the insert cap (gold piece in the picture), there is a special spanner needed but when I pushed down on strut it rebounded well, maybe a bit soft.
