Default How do you find out how much broadband/downloads you are using?

Ive had a call from BT offering me a better package on my internet.

Im with BT business broadband and normal BT for phone, and supprice supprise the 2 are seperate companies so wont exchange info.
I tried last year, but my contract (which i never signed "its verbal sir" meant i couldnt cancel with out a hefty charge)

As im paying £170 per quater at the mo for phone and broadband, and to be honest the broadband is shit, 4OD is impossible and even you tube has become a nightmare.

The new deal basically means my 1/4 bill will be halved!!!

But there is a limit to the downloads.

What I need to do is find out just how much memory/download/broadband im using per month on average. Sorry i dont know the technical terms like gigs and mega ma thingies.

Is there a way to find this out on my pc, as I dont want to change the package to find out im over the limit each month and it actually costs me more on charges!!

Thanks in advance.

theres probably a bit of software that you can down load to monitor this stuff, not sure what though as ive never been bothered,But, verbal agreement, surely theres a way out of that, maybe you could argue that your paying for a service that isnt being delivered?
Ive use that one before and got my contract(phone) cut form 18 month to 12 month with no penalty's at all.

The contracts out of its tie now, so this is no longer an issue.

I just want to be sure im not actually downgrading

Ive no idea how much bandwidth (is that the right word) I use per month. If its under the new amount they want to give me ill be much better off.

But I really dont know how much I use to make the decision

What is attractive is the bt guy tells me with a combince phone and broadband i should get a much faster service then i have at the mo as in theory im running 2 seperate lines at present (something tells me this is bullshite/ sales waffle tho) And anyway im paying £85 per quater on the business so I really should have a fast speed already .

arggh bloody computers.

Free download - http://www.netlimiter.com/download.php (third one down - Net Limiter 2 Monitor)

Very simple, shows you what programs are using internet on one pane, and on the other it shows the amount in your choice of kb, mb, gb, and you can view a single day split over hours, a month view, a year view, etc

You'll probably get a better deal (and much better customer service) if you bin off BT. Bunch of useless goons!

Ring them and ask what your download limit is per month/ 1/4 or whatever, and they should tell you.

Gigs is fair amount, i.e for the average user who simply uses msn/yahoo messenger, and surfs the internet, they wont use 2gb in a month.

If your someone who downloads loads of mp3 songs, films and what not then yes you will easily exceed the limit and probably double(or more) of what your limit is.

I haven't you can see a breakdown of usage, hourly, daily, weekly, monthly, yearly etc etc and you can see what programs are using bandwidth etc.

I found that my claimed usage from BT was far higher than what Net Limiter reported, which could have only really meant that someone was on my wireless connection. This was ages ago, of course since then I've upped the security.

so how much were you using on an "average" month before and after your security was unbreached

i have no idea how much i use but no ones said anything to me and i'm on it most evenings and have all the usual youtube/photobucket type accounts, plus i'm on here all the time looing at pics and stuff so it's got to be up there in the higher end of the home user bracket and the kids do loads of stuff on the computer too, so does the wife seeing as all her work now requires a computer to print ou stuff ro school and do reports and shit like that

Our usage this year is between 5gb and 15gb per month (up and down). Less lately.

I used to download more than I do now. The high months were claimed at 95gb from BT, but Net Limiter reckoned more like 50gb. As soon as I locked the wireless down, that changed. That must have been a while ago though, as I can't find any high months like that as far back as Net Limiter goes on this installation (2007). 40gb total is about the highest I can see.

so 40-60gb/m is high useage then

what are bt limiting you to as "normal" usage and at what point will they start to charge you the "excessive" usage fees?

Don't think we've ever had any excess usage fee's, but have had the connection throttled. That was when the usage was >50gb I think.

40-60gb is quite high IMO.

40-60gb a month is quite high. I rarely exceed 30gb a month and think I'm a fairly high user!

Net Limiter Monitor only monitors the local connection, and not total useahe, so won't show whatever had been used over wifi. It only calculates the data used by the computer it is installed on.

right guys havnt tried the net limiter thing yet.

But i did manage to get through to bt after 20 on hold And this is BT business.

The lady did a check on my broadband and she said Im using so little that it hasnt even showed up on her program. Shes doing another check today and is calling me back to be double sure.

Which is great news, as she said im paying for a full business usesage and not even using 2% of it

Im quite supprised at that as You tube is on pretty much every day, and Im on lots of forums with lots of pictures, and I probably upload at least 40 pictures per week.

So looks like I can cut my bill in half.

Was round a mates last night he has sky. broadband and phone for £40 a month. Im already paying £40 as it stands now and i get phone, dog slow broadband and only teresterial bbc1,2, itv and C4 .

Tempted buy the sky package, means my bills will be the same but I get SOOOO much more,,,ummm? Bubt do I really want sky, hardly watch tv as it is. Mrs would love it tho.

I recommended netlimter to Christian when he was having issues with brandwidth limits....It is a nice little program... It just does what it says on the tin and no more!

Plus it's fee!

Good memory, I had remembered this, but didn't think you would have.
