Resurrection of FRST
I am getting my FRST back on the road after 3 years sat in the garage.
one cylinder was down on compression originally, after removal it had a crack down the side. (boost hose came off turbo and boost went sky high which killed it)
Sent piston off to see what size and they dont have any piston that size. The car has 1.8 zetec bottom end, so the other pistons (going off prev build receipt) say 0.5 oversize. Which should be 81.1 but my piston is 80.9.
So that leads onto to what happened previously. One piston cracked before and a garage replaced it. They could have just slapped any old one in? (I had issues with the garage anyhow) or maybe all are of this strange size.
Just want advice on what to do next?
The other 3 pistons are fine and have covered only 3k miles. They are ''apparently'' 0.5 oversize 20thou skimmed to lower compression ratio?
whats your thoughts please? If it was the correct size then i would get one piston, machine it down for compression and re-fit along with new shells and rings. Now i dont know what to do!?
thanks
Carl

No, the garage only sent off the nakered one. So I asked them to send off the futher 3 just to confirm there indentical to the cracked one. If they are then i need to find out exactly what they are, as 80.9 is not 0.5 oversize piston from a 1800 zetec?!

You will struggle getting aftermarket low comp pistons for a 1800 zetec, my advise would be to either get a 2.0 bottom end or have your 1.8 bored out so it will take 2.0 pistons. Cranks are the same anyway

Seriously? Is there no manufacturer for them? Would it be okay to bore it as far out as a 2.0?

dxb 61 up, 23 down get this on a mug
legendary automatic diesel 3 seies BMW that eats supposed supercars for breakfast.Unbeatable in the 1/4 mile drag.
The guy sat weeping at the traffic lights in his brand new, shiny 911. The dxb had pulled up next to him.

I've never heard of a manufacturer, I'm sure CP would custom make some for you. For the cost of boring your 1.8 block out it would be far more economical to go down the scrappy and buy a cheap 2.0 engine and get that bored slightly. What is your 1.8 out of? Does it have oil spray jets in the block?
P.s having not actually seen a 1.8 block, I'm unsure if it's o.k to bore them out that far, though with the 1.8 and 2.0 Zetec it was only the bore size that was changed so I would think it's alright (this needs confirming). If you decide this route get FRS pistons (Makesure you get either FRS or Blacktop rods with them) as it leaves you with further boring potential and would be cheaper aswell

I dont want to spend thousands mate, just want to get her running again. Not in it for numbers.. I would be happy with 200HP mate. Just for a little fun thats all. I have the bm for track days and the like.

You can get a full engine for 100 quid, the head will run 200hp easily with a set of cams. Omega pistons aren't much at all, especially comapred to hunting down 1800 low comp pistons....
Wouldn't price yourself out just yet.

You wouldn't just throw a smokey old zetec in and hope for 200hp, the omega pistons would need fitting eh?! Not read the bit about cams?
Think they're forged though IIRC, 250hp no problems. Or just get another forged set Accralie, Arias, CP as said if you're deffo going whole hog. What turbo you running now?

It Wasnt Me!
Do it once, do it right.....
3 options imo.
put a std 1600 back in.
build a 2.0 forged bottom end (i,e. properly)
get some custom forged pistons for the engine you have.

FCUK ME, all comes out now.
APPARENTLY ITS A 2.0 zetec block.
Was advertised when I bought it nearly years ago as a 1.8 and also the last company to rebuild it also said it was a 1.8.. Whats that all about.
Thought 2.0 zetec pistons were strong?
So I am now stuck with what to do..
A big re-build with Forged low comp pistons in the 2.0 block or whether to scrap it and get a 1600 used and leave it at moderate power?
