Default E55 AMG

Anyone had one or any experiences of them, I'm off to look at a 2003 facelift model tomorrow with just shy of 100k on the clock. Any help or advice appreciated...

These things are bad for rust I think mate... was towards the end of the period where Merc had cut costs so the cars weren't needlessly over engineered anymore. I actually got told they werent galvanising the shells at that time, but not sure how likely or true that was.

They go like stink though, remember having a blast with one in an old car of mine and it was surprising what the big Merc was able to do.

Cheers,
Grant

I'd also heard that. Been looking at the RS6 or jaguar XJR, but the merc is top of my list at the minute...

I think the 2003 on cars are ok, it was the earlier 211s that had the problem.

The 30 year corrosion warranty doesn't need a full MB service history but it does need the annual MB inspection that is normally done during a service.

I have one as I wanted to be different to the normal M5 crowd. They are a cabable car but rust really badly. Mine looked great when I got it and two years later its rusting on the arches etc. Also they are all auto which I found to be shite for my driving style when I took it round the ring. In hindsight I should have paid the premium and got the M5. If I had the extra bonce I would have an RS6 over the Merc anyday.

When looking at the Merc check the history and make sure its complete. Also try all the electrics as there are so many things to go wrong in there! The Cats have gone on mine and Mercedes wanted 4k just for a pair of cats!

My Mum had a 1999 W210 special edition (Larger fuel tank, 350 horses and some other bits) was a fast car, good acceleration for a big saloon whilst been really comfy (leather) and was good with corners and that. Obviously 350 sounds little in such a big car though! It had the 17" / 18" AMG alloys with Avons on each corner which was expensive every couple months as it chewed the rears up. Good overall car though. As my step dad is a mechanic, he got the bodywork done and it was immaculate (through a body shop the business uses), but it wasn't too bad before it was done (rust wise and paint).
