been offered a t4, and i'm in two minds
was going to keep greens and t34 but been offered a t4 for next to nothing, if i went greys/t4 would it be a nightmaqre with the lag? would the car then be a on/off car power wise, either all or nothing or if stu live mapped it would it be pretty ok , dont know what to do , i really fancy the extra kick etc that i assume you get off the bigger turbo but if the lag was ridiculous i think i'd sharp get sick off it, the car would normally get driven hard on motorways and the track/1/4 mile etc so i'm not really that bothered about quick spool up round the twisties, prefer the straight line ooomph if ya know what a mean, what do you boys say who have them????

Sorry to say but i disagree with the T4 being crap.
Not that bad imo.
i had a T34 .63 and when i got the escort with the T4 and greys,i was very surprised!
Decided to keep the T4 on and get rid of the T34.
Happy with its umph when it gets going.
Not as quick off the mark as the t34 but when it spins up the car just seems to go and go.
In the middle of getting my car set up with Karl and with just the little bit he has done it has made it feel evev better.
As for the fuel......better than the t34 and greens!
Surprised me too.
I will be using mine for track,0-60, 1/4 mile too.
You can get bigger better turbos than the T4 but if you can get it cheap, go for it!
Dave.

Ermmm..... Been there done that, and now I'm going for Universal Turbo's T38 (Not to be confused with Turbotechnics T38 which appears to have surge problems). Vince at Universal Turbos builds up a special specification turbo using a T34 Body, mated to a .63 ar exhaust housing. Both housings are machined out and a new turbine wheel is fitted, along with a T4 Exhaust Turbine. This turbo is very surge resistant, and will come on boost at about 3500 - 3700rpm, and pulls all the way up and past 7,000rpm and will run 28psi all day long. I have the turbo but haven't fitted it yet, as the new engine is still in the process of being built (Karl Norris) Then engine will feature a fully modified head, special cams (For low lag, high torque) and a semi low compression ratio and modified pistons. It will be an affordable 420bhp engine, capable of more bhp, but I want a reliable engine that will last a while with low lag (As low as possible) and high torque (As high as possible) and above all will be reliable (As relieable as a 420bhp engine can be). All the nessessary anciallaries are fitted to cope with the engine.
I chopped in a T4 in favour of this T38, as I wasn't happy with the lag, and the need to be in the top end rpm range to keep the T4 spooled up. There's nothing wrong with a T4 (relatively speaking) but it depends on your driving style and what you want. And I didn't think the T4 was going to suit my driving style. I didn't want to get blown away by Nova's and Saxo's while I was waiting for the T4 to spool up.
Remember that the T4 is now nearly a 20 year old design, and there are better turbo's on the market, although they are expensive. If it's that cheap, the try it and see......... But I think something like Universal Turbo's T38 will give you everything you want, without the lag.
I know Steve Scott recently built a similar engine to mine, using this turbo and was very pleased with it. Also Bosch Man (Ima/Phil) used this turbo on his 450bhp engine (Estimated bhp) and it also appeared to suit him. (Quick Spool Up and still capable of producing big boost at the 7k rpm rev range.
Turbo's....... So many to choose from now. Only time will tell.

Looking at Dougs (Which I've seen the Dyno Print out before)...... This one certainly does work, but bear in mind that doug's engine wasn't just a matter of putting on a T4 and it suddently producing these figures. This engine would have been spec'd for this turbo and the other items he used.
Nice engine going by the Dyno Print Out. But I wonder what it would have done using a more modern turbo.
Must admit, I'd be happy with that though Doug.

i must admit ive driven T4 powered cars and i do not like them at all , seams like the smallest power band in the world when your waiting for it, than all happens so fast its all over not for me, but as a fast buck if its really cheap buy low , sell high as some goons still want to pay good money for an old truck unit

Ive had T3...T34 .48....T34/38 Hybrid...T4...will have GT35R soon.
Best turbo for the road is the T34 .48 with 4 x greens (2bar peak 27psi held circa 340bhp)
T3 to slow
T34/38 is too fooking dangerous (2.4bar peak 2bar held on 8 greens)
T4 is just too laggy for the road..but scary when on boost (34psi held on 8 greens)
GT35R dont know yet BUT at 2.5bar held on 8 greys i'd say my saff will be turning Japanese..as in kamifuckingkaze ....oh and less lag than a T4 due to roller bearing technology I dont think i will be seeing 2006
