a 1.8 petrol mk3 mondeo is a bloody good daily runner, surprisingly good on fuel (well mine is anyway) reliable, comfy and nice to drive...your opinions might be different to mine but i find it excellent- and you can pick them up for £1k

Dont think the passat would be in price range for you but a good car for run around.
Ive got a corola for £550 and in 2 years ive done 1 oil change, its got over 120k on it but its never let me down and bar tyres passed mot ist time. Not thirsty either and 1.6 so not too bad with insurance.
Defo recomend a jap car for run around. also acord estae n civic saloons, spacious and minimum maintanance. cant go wrong.

If you don't mind looking like a bellend, then get a micra. A friend of mine used to have one, he ran it on pennies, it had done 150,000 miles when he bought it and he owned it 2 years, never spent a penny on it apart from servicing, ragged the tits out of it every day, i was tempted to buy it off him actually when he sold it

I'd vote for my old Escort mk4 (or similar as mines not for sale.lol)
Never brakes down or fails to start. HCS variant is coilpack so immune from shitty weather.
Maintenance is piss - air filter, oil, plugs , discs, pads, etc.. all pennies.
Only issue is rust so make sure you check.
It literally costs me fuck all and is 100% ready to go whenever I am.
I always chuckle when I pass a recovery truck with a new motor on the back.
If you can find an estate or combi - all the better. Low load space with no lip so you can move appliances and shit with ease (they slide in and out). Fold flat rear seats so you can fill it with bricks and a proper roof guttering for a cheap rack.
I often have mine sat on the stops and she still makes it home.
