Default Any VAG techs in here?

AS title - need a hand with the Girlfreinds Polo.
Its a 99 plate 1.4, and has an intermittent starting problem - some times when starting it will start for around a second, and then die.. - can do this 4 or 5 times on occasion, and then start and drive as per normal.

I've done a search on the net, and apparently this is due to the immobiliser module sensor in the steering column? - does this sound right? Is it easy to replace if this is the cause, and how much am I looking at for the part?

We've tried both keys, and on her spare it does it less, but the fact its still doing it is doing my head in to be quite honest!

My 2000 GTi had a problem like this but it would fire and die straight away, it wouldn't run unlike yours. Then PoloGTI off here came round with the proper VAG com machine and went through everything. He then found that my key had split and the immobiliser chip had fallen out and been lost so had to go to VW and buy a new key and get it recoded to the car (i thing it was about £100) but it doesn't sound like that' happened to yours as it still runs! Have you put it on a diagnostics machine? If you haven't and you're near by I have a basic VW fault code reader you're more than welcome to use to see if and codes come up? I'm just off the M25 Jct 5
