get yourself down the pet shop
you can get 1 spray to attract the cats to stuff, eg the scratching posts
and another spray to stop them scratching the sofa, its a lemon spray they dont like the smell/taste of.

A lot of cats don't like scratching posts, like mine, and prefer the scratching boards.

There are several things you can try!

Catnip! You can get a catnip spray, spray it on the scratching posts, and it will attract them to the posts more.

White vinegar and Lemon Juice.... if you spray this on your sofa ( it can go sticky though! ) the combination seems to repel them! Or if you want something that smells a bit sweeter, some sort of orange juice.

The water squirter trick is a VERY good one. Keep a little squirter with you on the sofa, as soon as you see em go to scratch, spray them, not directly at them, but close enough so they know what youre doing! everntually they will learn that if they scratch... they get wet!

BUT ultimately, he is still a baby.....

I dont have any experience with cats mate, only dogs, but i wouldn't "wait and see" just because your suite is already fooked. He may stop on his own eventually, but later on when your out, he might think "Hmm, i might go scratch that wallpaper. Hey, atleast i wont get in trouble for it!". This is because he know's there wont be any consequences. Im not saying beat the fuck out of him everytime he does it, but a firm poke, or a spray with water and he will soon learn not to do it.

Whatever happens mate, good luck with it.

a spray bottle filled with water will do the trick. cats dont like to be wet, so once you spray them, they stop what theyre doing. after a short time, they stop doing it all together.

You can't train a cat like you can train a dog. Own a cat, deal with scratched furniture, it's no big deal.
