faster ca i've ever been in was a 160 brake r5gtt

i was shitting myself during that test drive and was almost tempted to buy it, just think of the money i would have saved if i'd bought that rather thanthe 3 door and been on that never ending slippery slope that is cosworth ownership

from what i'v heard R5 gtt are no better dojj, but atleast a 1400 would be cheaper than a 2.0ltr to fix, there deffo a coffin car even though i always fancied one when i was younger

edit: thought they where 1300 not 1400

r 5 gtt are 1400 push rod engines and are utter shite reliability wise. most will be on at least there 10th head gasket by now. i would deffo prefer a cossie
in fact most r5 owners upgrade to the f7p and f7r engines which are 137 bhp for the 1800 and 150 bhp for the 2.0 and the volvo 1700 turbp engine is an easy swap to. ben from retro renault has a 2.0 on throttle bodies in his 5 and that is putting out about 200 bhp

There are some right power snobs on here

I had a vts runabout for 2 years and i'd say that was classed as quick!

Cant believe people need cars to beat litre bikes or have 500bhp/tonne to be quick

Quick/fast/rapid/brutal are all relative to what you have had experience of. A standard cossie to me at the age of 17 was very quick. Having been in the fastest of the fast and owning a reasonably quick one myself a standard cosworth is now not quick to me.

Yeah , after you've been in a slightly modded one standard is very poor,I had a 205 1.9 gti and it felt so much quicker than a standard cos. Less weight helps suppose.

Its all about perception.
You soon get used to what you have - and get bored.
I found my XR2 more boring than my Minor - despite having easily twice the power. Nothing gets the adrenaline pumping like doing 100mph on 40 year old running gear with the whole shell falling to bits around you.

Fastest 'feeling' car iv ever been in/had was a t34 saph 2wd running 34psi (peak) msd setup. Thing felt brutal and never got used to the power down a country road.

I then got a T4 power running 35+psi saph 2wd, the way home it felt very fast at the top end but didnt have the punch of the t34 car, after having it a week it didnt feel fast at all even thought it was still peaking at 35+psi, I would of put money on that it had a problem as surley I could of got used to the power already?!? I broke it so never did check if it had a problem.

Then in March this year I bought a slightly damaged audi TT powered Lotus Exige, rolling road graph of 310bhp at just 1.2bar boost and only ever driven it in 1st gear around the yard with no clams on. Once its out the body shop Im going to get it remapped to 1.4bar and the cold start fueling sorted so should be around 330bhp and I estimate the thing weighs about 800kg so hopeing that will be the fastest car iv ever had/been in but time will tell. Would like to see 11sec qtrs in it.

There's kind of two types of quick - quick like a Caterham because it weighs fuck all, and quick like a big Skyline with loads of power. I always feel like a big fast car feels more impressive that a quick light car. If that makes sense.

In the real world in comparrison to other cars on the road, as little as 250bhp is enough to see off most things and feel fast.

I got a few pics of the Enzo as its owned by a guy close to my place. He was the guy who supplied us cars for my brothers wedding. The Bugatti is owned by a friend of his in Iver. Only got 1 pic of it but will dig it out.

power to weight ratio off anywhere over 250 bhp and it should be fun and if it goes round bends well and stops well then that should do, start to get to the 400bhp p/w ratio then things should be very fast

quick depends on what your used too - the quickest car i've owned was my cossie, 30psi, t34.55 stage 3; when the turbo reached full boost it was a nice punch

i'll never forget the day i took a lad out from work who used to think his modified VR6 (200hp ish) was rapid; he genuinely believed he could keep up with me. i took him down the dual carriage way in the cossie and the bloke was holding onto the seat base! - he couldnt stop giggling when i was nailing it through the gears

still makes me laugh to this day

I have to laugh at myself here, reading some of the considered fast 1/4 mile times...... "Not living my life 1/4 mile at a time" I thought your average car ran 14s, fast cars ran 12s, and really fast sub 10s.

Too much Fast & Furious me thinks lol.

When i think of s quick car i think of it of what it is. For example to me a crx i vt is a quick little car as its 17 years old has a 1.6 na engine and 150bhp. Basically compare it to an xr2i of the same age and class and it is a quick car for what it is. Obviously its not a FAST car as such in the big scheme of things.

A quick car to me is a car that stands out in its class or is as quick as cars with bigger engines and more power.

What would you consider to be an "average car", as 14 seconds is pretty quick?

I suppose it all depends on your definition of fast. I'd class any car capable of getting into the 12s as very fast, and anything sub 10 secs as very very very fast!

tbh, anything road legal which does a low 11/high 10 is very, very quick on the road.

For the real world, if you can get up to 100mph FAST then I reckon that's all you need. My Focus does 0-60 in about 7.4 seconds but after that is where the lack of real power and torque come in. It pulls through 3rd up to 90mph nicely enough but after that, it isn't going anywhere in a hurry. Fastest car I've ever been in was a 300bhp Evo 6. That went through the gears like a train and clocked up 110mph in a stretch I'd only manage to clock 80-85mph if I'm lucky. That to me is properly fucking fast.

I'd say for hot hatches and things like that ~250bhp in a fiesta, focus, astra, corsa is fast.
For larger cars e.g. 3 series, sapphires, imprezas, evos etc ~350bhp is fast.

I am on my 2nd ST170 the first one when i got standard was a let down, it felt gutless, then spent loads on it and it went better. I now have another st170 and its quicker than my last one was when partially modified so I think with some cars no matter what model no 2 are the same, an st170 pulls app 50 in 1st, 72 in 2nd and 95ish in 3rd and with 3 gears to go is plenty fast enough for me.

on a track it might not hold up against more powerful cars but either way i love it to bits. a buddy of mine has a gay 320 bhp subaru and the quickness of mine actually surprised him, ok so noway as quick as his but for what it is im happy, and through the bends where it counts i happily upset civic type r's (there faster on a straight but cant handle bends)

I have no idea what my 1/4 mile time is, anyone got any idea what it is for a st170

A quick car is something has all the handling parts to go with the power. A very fast car is something with loads of power shit brakes and no traction.

I used to work at a Bentley dealership and went out in plenty of Continental GTs. The torque of them makes them feel ridiculously quick.

To be a properly quick car it needs to be able to keep up with superbikes.

Even if you do have a properly quick car you can soon become accustomed to it so your perception will always change.

Honestly on the road, I don't see people needing more than 350-400bhp in a car like an Impreza or an Evo. 99% of cars on the road will get toasted with that amount of power through bends and on the straights. In smaller chassis where the power won't go down so well, 250-300bhp in something like a Focus again, imo is good enough. But agree you need handling to go with the power. Mine has GAZ shocks all round, and fully polybushed front and rear. I've upset plenty of smaller engined BMWs, Audis and Mercs before.

i considered my estate to be pretty quick and well handling with the usual upgrades .quickest car ive owned anyway and could see of most of your average road fodder.
