Default Those DVLA "vehicle tax checking" cars that sit at the side of the road........

what can they do? drove past one today in my cossie "on route to mot" but the rent ran out in it last october!

was just a car sat there with a camera behind it and a sign flashing up "checking vehicle tax"

can i expect a letter through the door or a fine or what? the car has been off the road for almost a year now for a engine rebuild which i've just finished so was on my way to the workshop to set the fueling for mot. the garage owner has said he'll back me in that i was taking it for mot so surely i shouldn't have too much to worry about but then i don't have a mot cert or anything to back this up as we couldn't get it finished but it will be mot'd tomorrow.

what am i looking at worst case scenario?

well i can prove with the mileage it hasn't moved since last year so they surely can't back date the tax that far and in all fairness as long as i can find what's bloody knocking under the car tonight then it's being mot'd and taxed tomorrow anyway.

shouldnt get any fine as long as the garage will back you up that the car was going for a mot.as further above you need an mot before you can get tax.if your going to use it now just tax it.

As long as the garage backs you up you will be ok.......

As long as it was the shortest distance from the registered address to the MOT Station.......ie, you wasnt on a road that is the oppersite way of the MOT station or your fucked and will have to pay the back dated tax till it was last paid for.

Driving an untaxed vehicle to an MOT test

You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station as long as you have adequate insurance cover in place for the use of that vehicle.
This is also for vehicles being driven to and from a pre-arranged test at a Vehicle Inspection Check (VIC) test station, an approved weight testing station and reduced pollution test.
assuming it was insured?

it is indeed insured from yesterday so i'm ok there. i was technically driving the opposite way to the test station where it will be heading tomorrow but could i use the defence that i was taking it to a garage today who is taking it for a mot tomorrow which is indeed booked for 3:30pm.

ah fuck it will just have to wait and see i guess.

Now that MOTs are computerised, won't they want to know why you were 24 hours late getting to your MOT station appointment?

Without an MOT, insurance is invalid anyhoo (afaik).

I assume you had declared the car SORN, and as such they will fine you because it was on the public highway.

Wait and see.

it's about the only hope i have really, failing that it's out with the cheque book.

i don't really get this sorn thing though, i know you aren't allowed to drive when declared sorn but you can't declare it not sorn without taxing it and you can't tax it without a mot so surely the sorn just goes as untaxed in this situation?

yes i know but some ppl are making it sound like it's even worse as the car is declared sorn but my point is i can't declare it not sorn without taxing it as then it would be just an untaxed vehicle anyway so i'm hoping and not expecting my fine to be any better or worse for the fact it's declared sorn.

Popular crap and untrue myth above, some vehicles don't need an mot test EVER in their life, and they most definitely are insured, as they have blue flashing lights on the roof!!
You will be fine, you are allowed to take to pre booked test, people always use this to shift just bought cars from auctions with no mot, ie buy a car is scotland, mot in southend, perfectly legal.
All mot is computerised now, so when it tallies with recently taxed you will hear nothing, but even if you do, contest it on the above grounds as you've broken no law.
