check the settings. Like make sure new box is set to RGB and not Pal etc etc
ALL the channels should be slightly better on a HD box... as you are now using a HDMI cable instead of a scart I take it?

it's your eyes telling you that the hd pic is so good that the normal pic is now crap
look at the pics in the program menu, they should all be in hd
or check out the indian channels, 784 seems to have the best cheap quality version of film on it to make a good comparison

Because the analogue SCART input helps mute some of the nasty compressed video artefacts, like the blockiness. Watch SD channels through the SCART input, and use the HDMI purely for HD channels. For as long as digital TV uses highly compressed video, it will always look poo. It doesn't help that they're trying to squeeze more channels in, and more HD channels into the same bandwidth - the only way is to reduce the bit rate of the rest of the channels, which gives the picture even more compression artefacts.
I don't agree - even on my 5 year old FD Trinitron (don't dis a quality CRT), Sky Digital's picture quality has been going slowly downhill over the last 10 years as they've been squeezing more channels in, reducing the bandwidth for the rest. The nasty compression artefacts are more obvious now than ever before.
it's the over air software update they do to make sure the stuff is up to date as possible
it might be that the hdmi cable is the problem, have you tried to connect the hd box via the scart lead to see what the difference is yet?
......on "normal" sky it's a better picture...but a scart lead cant produce a HD picture....so it kind of defeats the object....the t.v's going back on satdy and an engineer is fixing it on mon/tuesday....i'm getting a load t.v.........

To update the software you pull the power lead out the back of the box, hold down the backup button and plug the power lead back in. Keep holding the backup button down until you get a screen on your tv saying updating system software.
this was on my sky+ box. I cant see any other box being any different. Hope that helps.

Its good if you have a on-going problem, but wont always be noticable normally. If you go into the menu you can see the software code, which may change after a forced download...

So true, I've been noticing this for years.
It's one of those things that pisses me off - and I can't help but notice it, lol. What's the point of paying out for the latest high resolution TV set only to be feeding it a shitty low-bandwidth, highly compressed signal?
All this hype about HD digital TV, and they can't even afford the bandwidth for decent quality SD digital TV.
rant over lol

..........what makes it worse is that now half the country has sky+/hd, what's the point in all the bandwidth sapping xxx +1 channels??!!!!!!!
If there was a problem with HDCP you wouldn't be getting a picture. Borrow a component video cable and see if the problem goes away - component can transmit HD at up to 1080P and doesn't carry HDCP data.
