Default HPI check problems?

Can anyone help me, i have placed a deposit on a car and when i have come to check the car with a hpi check its showing as having finance out standing. Now i have spoken to the owner of the car and he produced a letter on headed paper to prove that the finance had been paid off last year. The finance company have also send further documentation to him to prove it has been paid off.

Now i dont really just want paper work to prove the car has no outstanding finance i want it HPI clear but one hand does not seem to know what the other hand is doing. Has anyone else been in this position before?

mate, if you have checked it, and it says that then it aint been paid off. get the bloke to ring the finance company while your there and confirm it. this will get some people in trouble saying this but I know of traders that have refinanced cars 2 and even 3 times to get some money sharpish, it could be somethin like that. it is possible that he has paid the finance with the company he had it with, but a past owner sold the car to a new owner without telling them it was on finance so you could end up getting chased by a different finance company.

I think its a case of someone in the finance company never pressed the keys to say the finance had been paid off.

The guy seemed as supprised as i was when i told him it was showing as having finance outstanding on it. The finance was paid off on the 17th of September 2008 and the letter dated the 20th of October 2008 on headed paper.

When he spoke to the finance company on Friday they said they would get the problems resolved but does anyone have any idea how long it could take for the information to pass through to the HPI check records?

HPI checks are ok, but still not 100%

did a check on a car at the weekend, came back all clear, drove 125miles, to have a look and walked away as the car was bent ( as in stolen of some sorts ) the police are on the case.

Ł25 quid of petrol, Ł20 hpi and 6 hours of my time wasted!

I had a similar problem when i sold a car ages ago. The buyer put a deposit on it and hpi'd it and told me there was outstanding finance on it. This seemed strange as i paid cash for it from a dealr and it was fully clear when i bought it. Turned out it was an admin error and they cleared it within half an hour and the deal went through as normal.

They can often make a balls of it. Just get the owner to ring up and get it sorted there and then. If he doesnt want to do that, then walk.

Fully agree. I HPI'd my new Golf smokeabout - it's a GT TDi 150 on absolutely everything paperwork wise, insurance company wise etc. etc. apart from the HPI which thinks it's a 130...

dvla do cock up with info. i have has a escort fresco which was a genuine 1 owner rs2000 that had been in all the top mags that the bloke never noticed said fresco.had a transit that was a fiesta by the dvla's mistake too. both easily sorted by contacting the clowns down the dvla and telling them and leaving my number so they could call me to sort it.

i have had cars that showed finance on a hpi that had been cleared cos the bird doing the admin broke a nail and forgot to remove it from showing finance.
its happend a few times aswell and the best way is to contact the finance company direct and not using the person selling the car's phone as you don't know who your yappping to and it could be a mate of the seller telling you its ok don't worry etc.

Get faxed/emailed confirmation of clearance (no further interest) from the finance Co. They will only send this to the person who took the finance out (you can get a copy from seller). Get the seller to tell the finance house to update the hpi record immediately as you're trying to sell the car and need it showing as clear and due to their incompetence, you are currently unable to legally sell it. THEN, get the seller to put the phone down to the finance Co. and to call hpi (01722 422 422) and ask them to check. Hpi are generally a helpful bunch.

Am sure it will be ok but 100% worth checking and also 100% worth speeding the clearance process up.

Good luck
