Default 2wd Cos Gearbox Options?

Im looking into options on a 2wd Cos gearbox. They appear to be going up in price on EBAY, etc so what other options are there? Im not looking at spending more than a £500 or I would just buy another 2wd box everytime.

Ive been told of a Jag gearbox being stronger and fitting with small mods? Anyone have any info on this? Which box to use out of which car, mods needed, etc?

Thanks for any help

How does that make sense? If you break 5 boxes at 500 quid each thats 2500 quid..

You could buy a decent box for that.. And it wont break

R5Ford, what Im getting @ is I don't wanna buy 5 boxes @ £500 when you can get something like a Jog box for £100 each after you've modded the car first. Im looking for as cheap options as possible.

And, not everyone had £2500 to spend at one time, so buying 5 boxes over different periods @ £500 would be a more suitable option.

Thanks for the info so far Anyone got contact details for Euan or AVA please? Will contact them and see what info they don't mind sharing

I found the solution to the 2wd Cossie gearbox/Diff problems way back in 1999, the Box & Diff have never been overhauled since that time & will im sure cope with anything I can throw at it.
Used a Tremec TKO600 box as used in the Mustang TypeR but fitted with .8 5th gear. My diff problems were solved with a Jag 10.5" power-loc with a 3.54 ratio as fitted to Diamler Limos.
Reyland do the box conversion.

i believe with the jag box you have to change the tail of the box

there is a thread somewhere which has pics of it but i cant find it for the life of me! - i'll keep looking

you might need a custom prop tho

The problem is you will be needing a new clutch and an adaptor for anything other than a T5 basically, which will be more than 500 quid

Thanks LHD, very informative thread

Rod, what sort of cash is that tho?

Just to pont out. I know it sounds like this work is for me, but its for me Brother (JB Fletch). His looking for stronger box options, but don't wanna spend shit loads. And if I buy a Saph his spent all the cash working out the strongest options

this may be way off, but can't the 2wd mt75 box be used, is it any stronger than a T5, don't know much about them, i know the prop would have to be modded, or get a T5 out of a mustang/camero/z28, ebay.com have loads of them, shipping shouldn't be difficult, i got a car shipper to ship in his container when i got a set of 18's shipped, cost me £80 plus duty/vat.

The Cossie T5 is stronger than the Xr4 one mate.

This is a 500bhp or so car, so needs something tough.

i'm on about 2wd mt75 not a type 9 out of a xr4, seeing as the mt75 4wd is used in 4x4 cossies, why can't the 2wd version of the same box be used in a 2wd car.

is it the box thats weak or the transfer box, has anyone tried the 2wd mt75.

so the other cheep option is the mustang t5, said to be a lot stronger, don't know if its true, but a built t5 from the states would be cheaper than a uk one i would guess.

i run the jag getrag 265 box euan used to run

the centre spline is identical to t5,you just have to make a plate up to adapt bellhousing, and custom make a prop from the 2 you have

you dont need to change clutch and you do loose speedo drive, jag take it from the axle

box is alot stronger imo

ive had it solid mounted and gearstick shortened too

its hard enough trying to find a manual jag box never mind an opal monza

the retios are lower 1,2 and 3 same 4th and taller fifth

there is of course a slightly longer throw than the t5,but its still notchy like the t5,not like the choclate feeling of the mt75

im in the middle of fitting supra w58 box strong and cheap box the ausies use these box's on a load of v6 and v8's good strong box but you do have to mate the bell housing and spiggot bush/bearing using a supra clutch
