what boxes did they use?

never heard of one to be honest but they may well of been none factory conversions.

come to think of it are there any 4x4 auto boxes from the ford range?

there was special order cars for most things, my missus dad had a escort xr3i cabrio that was automatic even though they never made them

There were definately auto saph's but ive never seen or heard of an auto escos, might exist, but if so mega mega rare

Ford UK at the time did not have a auto 4x4 box.

so no they did not make them.

Saw a genuine auto Sapph for sale a while ago, but never seen an Escos, seems a bit on the pointless side to me.

there was many years ago a G reg flint grey xr4x4 turbo technics auto, my dad tried to buy it when it was about 3 years old, it was originally owned by ford and the story I was told by the seller was it was specially ordered by a top boss in ford.
bit like the auto mk2 rs2000 for mr ford himself (henrys grandson IIRC)
don't remember what gearbox it had in tho

I built 3 2wd sapph`s back in the day with hand controls for lads who had been paralysed...... I used an uprated version of the 4ALD box...
