4wd cossie/skyline gearbox
whats involved with this conversion,i know 2 props would need to be made, gearbox adapter plate, what mods are needed on the tunnel, what clutch would be used, how much power can the skyline box take, what is the best box to use e.g r32,r33,r34 or are they all the same, can the boxes be switched between 2wd and 4wd

im doing my tunnel at the min on my escos, will post pics up in my resto when ive finished at the weekend
its not a small job and with the adaptor plate teh gearbox has to move back 2cms more than where a cossi box would be, so this means it may sit higher, ive done mine so its sits higher but its straight so even if ive made it to high at least i know its not going to touch anywhere
but luckily on teh escort cossies the centre console is a open style for the tunnel unlike the sierra one where it runs flat against the tunnel so i can still run all my interior, sierras i dont think its possible as the tunnel would need raising anyhow

R32 box is adjustable between 2wd and 4x4, the others (r33, r34) is automatic between the two when wheels spin(If I remember correctly)
The org. prop -> front diff can be used iirc, new one for the rear. Reyland does bells for the os geiken box, but I think he got the connections to get one made for the standard one also, if you pay
If you go this route, please, please give ikeya in japan a call. He makes an sequential shifter for skyline boxes, so you use the clutchpedal as normal, but the stick is sequential <3
Google Ikeya formula

im sure the r32 and r33 can run rwd and 4wd im sure even teh r34 can
end of the day theer are all electronically controlled for teh 4wd system the r34 being the most adavnced out ther lot but the r32 and r33 are very similar
ill either be using a r32 or r33 as ive been using a r32 box for the tunnel build, i will look into the r34 as its a 6 speed and a getrag box so i know its going to be bullet prrof, but im sure there longer due to extra gear but i need to measure one to see how much difference there is as i may just get one in with my tunnel mods ive done
only time will tell, but ive finished the top half just got to dress up the welds, and ill finish the udnerneath up over the weekend or next week depending how busy i am

some pics
will do a write up in resto when ive finished it, but this will give you the general idea of whats involved, i still need to dress the welds up so still looks a mess at the min and still need to do underneath but youcan see how much works involved, and my seat still moves forwards and back wards

Seems to becoming a popular conversion as my mates in the middle of doing it on his xr4x4, he stripped third gear on the mt75 a while back so needs a stronger box, he seems to like a challenge

when i spoke to richard bell at rsp about dynoing my car he said as hes only got a 2wd dyno with the r33s and r34s they have to pull the front propshaft to disable the 4wd. so i assume it cant be disabled electrically or they would do it.

all the transfer boxs use the same design, they have fulid to pressurise the plates to activate the 4wd, r32s yes pull the fuse out which turns off the ecu i think, unsure on r33 or r34s though, but im going to be running ar33 or hopefully a r34 box and will have the pump on a switch for rwd and 4wd

there will be an apdaptor plate, but the gearbox will also require a mod i think as the starter motor hole is on turbo side so this will need to be chopped off as it will get in the way of the exhaust and then modded to suit the new location on other side, this is the only downside i can see oh and the main shaft is thicker

there's quite alot to consider before undertaking this conversion,i am currently in the planning/prep stage with this box on my xr4x4 twin turbo,if you weld the bellhousing then it has to be spot on,and you have to take into consideration that the bell housing will warp slightly when being welded,so allow a bit of room for manovure.
i got my r33gtr vspec box input shaft ground down to 14.9mm so i could keep the standard v6 spigot bearing, the v6 bellhousing was machined together with the r33 box and you have to get the input shaft protrusion right, adaptor plates could be made but it will just make the gearbox longer than it already is but a big plus would be you won't need to strip the box down, you would just need to bring the spigot bearing out with an adaptor,if you move the box back then the clutch arm travel will also be moved, loads of thing to watch out for on these.
I know welding is the only way i could do it,no off the shelf parts for the old v6,a proper cast would be a bit stronger but would not be worth it unless i could sell a few hundred off them, not worth the hassle either,i have gone for a pull type twin plate and modified a 2.8 flywheel as no matter what i did the 2.9 flywheel was too thick and the push type slave cylinder would not sit right with front diff and exhaust,i hope the clutch is good enough as i've only got 280-290bhp but nearing 400ftlbs of torque, hence why i'm doing this conversion, broken a few mt75's and can't really afford 5k upwards for a decent box.

All the skyline boxes can be switched to 4x4, 2wd and a few different ratios in between.
There is a Sky Lab controller which can be bought relatively cheaply to do this.
The R32 is the only one you can "pull a fuse" on.
R32 and R33 boxes are very very strong 5 speeds, even regarded by some to be stronger than the 6 speed R34 box.
And weight wise I would imagine that the 4wd system with the fluid pumps are the extra and they can be positioned more centrally on the car so help weight distribution.
Check the Jap sites, mainly Skyline owners club and GTR owners club, plenty of info regarding boxes on there.
