Default Does anyone know the difference between different types of steel?

im making some tie bars for the front of my mini, and ive been told (by a very reputable source) that 304 Stainless is the best to use, but i always understood stainless to have a low tensile strength
if you have seen a mini front suspension setup you will understand how much tension is on this bit, and how much damage will be done if it goes wrong

It is a good grade but not for that purpose.

Look at the UTS of the material

304 SS = 500MPa
T45 = 700-900MPa

For suspension components I would use T45

It does not need a heat treatment after welding either!

Isn't 304 what they normally make decent exhausts out of?

304 is a corrosion resistant stainless, ideal for exhaust, header tanks, and industrial sinks.

Might be worth speaking to a roll cage or chassis place like caged for an off cut!

You want just basic CDS tubing mate, not 304 stainless.

Something like this:

T.45 is tube.

You probably need;

EN14/S92 Carbon Manganese Bar
.

Bright drawn up to 26mm diameter

lol, although i do like over-engineering stuff like this

i should have probably mentioned earlier, i need to be able to weld to it fairly easily and without having to heat treat it afterwards if possible.

I am curious to know, who is the very reputable source who advised you that 304 Stainless would be the best option?

Well a roll bar needs to be springy, and a tie bar doesnt, so that should have been your first clue it wasnt ideal for a tie bar surely?

Totally different applications IMHO!
