Off topic, do you know "city girl" from the london paper who revealed herself yesterday?

365 quid an hour at 25 years of age, plus a decent bonus system, thats pretty good going IMHO, and she was pretty fit too!
let's swap wages for a year then see you change your mind. i work my arse off every fucking day, doing 3 peoples jobs, can i complain ? no, ( even though i am ) because i'm one of the lucky ones that still have a job.

I have to update my paperwork every 3 years (forklift licenses), costing me in the region of £1000 and have been doing so the last 10 years. I've looked into re-training, but you need to have money to be able to afford the time off work to do the training, so basicly, it's a case of save up what you can, when you can, and pray that you get to keep your job no matter how shit it and the wage are and wait !

(btw, that's not meant in an offensive way, so don't take it as so.)

Ive earned the same wages you are on, so I know what it is like, but I put a lot of effort into bettering my career prospects and now I am more comfortable as a result of my hardwork.
Im not going to feel guilty that I earn a reasonable wage, nor would I expect people earning much more than me to do so, I just view them as proof that if I were more money motivated and prepared to dedicate further time to improving my career prospects that there is opportunity still out there.

I'm only basing it on what you've said.

To me, personally, for something to be "fucking awesome", it would have to be very near to the pinnacle of whatever it is I was describing. IE/ Something to aspire to. I think EVERYONE should aspire to more than that, personally.

I said 1500 a month PRETAX

16.9K a year is

1408 a month PRETAX

It was the fact that you viewed an increase of 7% as "fucking awesome" that seemed poorly worded, if you had something like "extremely useful" it probably would have been better worded when talking about 70 quid a month after tax extra or so?

I tell you what would be fucking awesome, if more people on below average wages didn't consider any of their money "fritter" money and put it to work. Small businesses, property or whatever.

Turn your fritter into a jumbo sausage and large chips.

at 23 I was in a different job on 32K a year in slough
at 24 I was in a different job on 80K a year in sunbury
at 25 I was in that same job and got a payrise to 120K a year
at 26 I was in no job at all, on 0K, and fucking shitting it
at 27 I was in a job in basingstoke on 32K a year

So for me my rapid rise in wages was a combination of ALL of the following:
Luck, I was in the right industry at the right time
Hard work
Long hours
Being prepared to go anywhere in the country that I had to in order to further my career.

And my drop in wages was just purely due to the collapse of the sector I was working in at the time, often the higher paid jobs have a lot more risk attached

I agree that to think 1400 a month shows a lack of ambition or self belief with out a doubt,

Move the goal posts fella or be content with what you have, but what ever you choose best of luck

So with those skills what is the cost of further training to drive earth moving equipment or something similar (l am presuming this possibly pays more) does the initial outlay give a bigger return in the long run? you obviously have some skills,

Agreed, the trick is definately to try and do things to increase your potential earnings, you probably wont get another job during this current recession very easily, but you could use the time to further yourself for when things pick up.

I would say that a third of a monthly wage left over after all deductions is pretty good going. It allows for a buffer if there are any hidden costs. It has to be put into perspective though, i.e those that are married and have families, or those that have no real commitments yet earn higher than the national average.

Earth movers etc is exactly where i'm aiming Mike ! but as i said before, i need the initial outlay in the bank before i can do it ! i did at one point have my rough terrain reach telescopic license ( the one they use on building sites ) which was while i was in plymouth, at the time i actually had money in the bank and had actually organised to move to birmingham where the jobs were ( at the time ) plentifull for that line of work ! unfortunately the move fell through and i ended up back at in good old southend, where there wasn't any call for rtrt flt drivers ( didn't have my drivers license so couldn't travel)

Agreed

Look into those all-terrain forklifts they use on building sites. I often see them when I'm out and site and know they can command a decent wage, and as long as you can impress the site manager, will never be short of work.

I feel that pain, not quite a couple of £k per month though.

Generally, high wages don't come without hard work. I can't progress salary wise in my job until I pass the promotion exams (which are hard enough as it is) - even then, the wages don't go up until the candidate finishes their probation in the role (another 2 years!).

Slightly deviating away from the original question, how many people out there still have a genuine decent final salary pension scheme? I lose around £100 from my take home pay each month, but this means I won't struggle when it comes to retiring early-ish.

Are you married or do you have kids, is the option of working over seas avliable to you, it could be a good way of building a large lump sum up in the bank

i have a son, he lives with his mum down in plymouth still (long story - not going there), working over sea is an option as long as i can still see him every month and as long as the income is solid as i pay her a wedge in maintenance every month.

Been poking about online and the cost of the all terrain flt license has gone down a bit since i last did it !

Maybe it is worth looking at going over seas to an emerging market for a while, building a nest egg then coming back and doing what you want

Your forgetting that, unless im wrong, but it holds true with most people in chips profession, that IT coders on contract have to renew their MCSE/CISCO/whatever EVERY 3 years at much greater cost than £1000. I think its something like £5k for an advanced cisco qualification.

Its all relative, chip earns 3-5x as much as you, but lives in london which costs 3-5x as much as where you live to live, and has to shell out for requalifications that cost 3-5x more than yours

Im speaking of this as i am in a similair field, i just cant be bothered to learn it.

I did that, was poor pay, so stopped driving forklift or opening up etc, as each time I was trained or given more responsibility was given no extra money; so ju7st did deliveries as I was originally hired on.

Can you not do hgv if you're used to driving/delivering?

I switched jobs and got about 10k a year more.

On a more serious note do a HNC in electrical or mechanical engineering and if you work as hard as you say you do there WILL be a job for you in the middle east. PM me for details. Will pay 50% of the course if you are serious.
