Don't be daft. I split a gaiter and almost popped a shaft after 4 hours on the track Mainly as I had A048's on the front, and ditchfinders on the rear. I did 3 track days in that car, which is alot for me as if you recall I was still billeted to a ship at the time, and was just 'taking some time off' Fell apart..... ppppfffftttt

It was my daily transport at the time too.

yeah good point i supose but tbh if theres no interior, no stereo to steal, and i fit a snap off steering wheel and leave the wheels at full lock, nobody will have any reason to break into it. i realise some prick might just for the sake of it but what will be the worst thatll happen? i know its still a risk but only as much as any other car with a £300 stereo or whatever?

Sure about that? I've seen plenty late standard looking Mk1 Mondeos badged up as ST24.....
Anyway, just meant get a V6 if going down that road..... a Zetec would be more sense too obviously if going down the turbo route.

try an find ya self an old sierra thats had a 24v cossy lump dropped in it. usually scruffy, cheap, and reliable as old boots. standard power is only 10bhp down on a standard sierra cosworth aswell.

RWD FUN!

Clio 172 - 2k
Braided Hoses, uprated pads, discs and fluid - £400
Toyo R888 - £300
Weight saving remove the seats and replace with 2 buckets - £600
Poly bushes - £100
Coilovers - £600

£4k for a pretty quick car! Call it 5k if you get someone to fit all the parts.

I totally agree with you there chip, but in this case my m8 got very lucky and bought the full car modded about 5 or 6 years ago for 500 quid, he can't have chucked more than 300 quid at it since either!
his biggest expense has been the tyres really, the bloody thing is so reliable, it did knack a front inner cv boot at croft this year tho..

well!! ive just agreed to buy a set of avo coilovers (just refurb'd and with uprated rear springs) a full set (front upper and lower, and rear) of strut braces, and a spare head + inlet and loom - which will be ideal for sending away to be modded.

and ive not even properly looked for a car yet

I'd fire 4k at a JDM Integra Type R then fit some sticky tyres. Most will already have quality uprated suspension kits fitted but even if they dont, they're not widely regarded as one of the best fwd cars for nothing, so the stock suspension is still good. Once the stock brakes (which are fine) die, fire some braided lines and uprated discs pads at it which will take mega abuse.

c200bhp
Around 1050-1100kg standard
LSD Gearbox
Honda Reliability
8800rpm limit
Recaro Seats

They dont need much persuasion to turn into a proper track tool.

Cheers,
Grant

No..... I sold after I paid off the ship. A good 3 month after THAT track day. I did 2 track days after that, both at the hill. I was only cursing because I had to get back to Faslane to the ship to be duty EO the next day And you're saying I have rose tinted glasses Didn't your Capri break down due to a carb problem that day?

Nah it was just overheating due to a crappy rad'. Still, on the day it kept on going strong with cool down breaks.....
Three years later I'm still using it on track too

I think you protest too much with all the Ford slagging.... deep down you want another

Small and light is best... it's all about the power-to-weight with track cars!

I did have a Mondeo ST24 track car, and with hardly any mods it was nippy(ish), and had a very tight chassis for what it was... you'll just need to make a lot of bits yourself as the Mondeo is very overlooked in the aftermarket world.

However, my vote is obviously for an XR2

i agree with this guy, my m8 chris jus bough one of these for 4 grand. i wouldnt wanna use it everday for work say as his fuel consumption barely meets double figures. However as a track car its got a buddy club back box on it and it SOUNDS MENTAL! theres loads of cheap parts about, and honda designed the type R as a bit of a road race car anyway.

but Beware of absolute knackerd thrashed recked examples m8.
100,000 miles and they need a rebuild and there usually imports with no history.

If im going to have a small car might aswell be a super light bike engined single seater. As said i hate fiesta's.

Do i care if a mondeo wont be as quick as some little renault NO, i am sure i would have just as much fun in a larger car

If it has to be Ford, how about a Focus? Handled pretty well straight out of the factory and there's plenty of them to choose from. Not the quickest car in the World but the 2.0 is no Sloth!

The 172 is a quick and cheap way to a fun little track car though!

As Steve says I had the XR4x4 for a few years now and it's done well over a dozen track days and is great fun and has been very reliable

I've only put discs and pads all round, tyres and 1 engine mount and a CV joint boot in that time. Can't fault em but if you don't want 4x4 go XR4i and just get out there and enjoy yourself

Click here for Croft in June and Steve (the youth Red 4x4 24v), Rob's (RobRS2 White XR4i 24v) and my Sierra's getting death, the clips over 8 mins though http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1LrLIikdojI

Great fun, cheap and don't worry if they're not uber quick

a gen3 rx7 is the ULTIMATE track car. can get good ones for like £7k
9,000 rpm and 300bhp standard !
anyone who has driven one, even a standard one will be amazed by the handling. and it only gets better with the mods.
and they sound EPIC with good exhaust system!!!!!

DO IT!

Less rigid and heavier than a hard top, not really a good starting point.

bobfish who is registered on here has done a sub 8 minute lap of the ring (btg) with a lightly modded gen3 rx7

thats same pace as mike rainbird in his mega money escort which is the quickest ford I can think of off hand round the ring

I suppose it depends a lot on what "budget" means - is it £7k for a nice RX7 (love em btw) or anything else for that sort of money, or £700 for something cheap and cheerful to thrash about?

thats for a decent one thats standard, or a scruffy heavily modified one, which there are alot.
but 5K will get u a tatty single turbo converted one, running like 450bhp.
3k will get u a scruffy standard one.
there genraly pretty bullit proof, just the engines need a rebuild every 60,000 miles. and on the drag strip they sometimes brake their diffs cuz they tramp of the line with bad suspension setups.
