You dont need to tell me about Clios mate, I have one myself as a cheap trackday car and Ive been round combe in my mates as passenger (clio cup) when he was banging out lap after lap in the 1:23s which is as quick as most evo's, that was his first time on track in the car too.
They are fantastic track weapons out of the box, and easy to make even better!

Honestly, I've had 9 RS Turbos. All special in their own way. All utterly useless at going fast. Most fun I've ever had on track was in my old 400 quid 205 GTi 1.9. Thrashed it to death and it came back for more. Was the most fun I've ever had outside of Mrs Rab's pants.

instead of buying a turbo, why not get a cheap mk4, zetec it and upgrade the suspension & brakes ? would probably roll in about the same money as a std S2 and might actually work on the track then too

See if you buy something that handles really well to start with, it makes a much better and more interesting track car in the end. Starting with something SHIT always ends up with something expensive, that'll just about keep up with something std thats NOT SHIT Trust me, have a look at my sig. 3-4 grand on keeping up with Std clios wearing R888's......
Buy something cheap and fun. It's easier and less hassle. Lose the blinkers

nothing wrong with big lazy V6 track cars
my xr4x4 cost me under Ł130 to buy and about a grand over 3 years in development
go out on a wet track day with ditchfinders on and even with 4wd you can have some fun!

my track car has be superb and drives really well, considering what it cost me to get here.

understand, but if you watch that video I posted the camera car is my m8s 12v xr4x4!!! (the engine isn't standard tho and does go well) he was on 888's hence he had grip and I didn't, and is the reason he is catching me hand over fist you can see I have the straight line speed on him tho!

The other good thing about elise's these days is the residuals have started to really hold on the older ones.
If he buys a sierra for a grand and throws 4 grand at it, if he is lucky he will see 1.5K - 2K back in say 3 years when he sells it on, losing him 3K+
If he buys an elise for 7500 now, in 3 years I reckon it will still see 5-6K back, so the cost of ownership will be half in terms of depreciation.
Its also more likely to be reliable than a home built special too!
My nova has cost me the value of 3 elise's and if I sold it I would have to break it just to see back the value of 1 elise, and its not as quick as one round a track and is less reliable as its a continual development platform.
It also gets through tyres at 2 or 3 times the rate that an elise would!
I have it as a hobby that I enjoy working on, and dont mind that I spent probably 20 hours working on it for every 1 hour it will see on track, but thats what makes it a project car not a track car.
My clio is going to be the opposite way round hopefully, shouldnt need to work on it much (although have had to chuck a couple of gearboxes at it) and should be very cheap to use on track.

Fast Ford snapper
Ford fair has made me really want a track car now
i mean really really want.
I am thinking MK1 Mondeo v6? set of coilovers, pollybushes, etc etc..
looking something like this
Any other Fords that will make good track cars, cheapish mind you, as it will probably get written off
p.s done want anything fiesta sized.

'94 spec BTCC replica track slag with a 300BHP ZVH would be sweet.....
Sure a fully stripped out Mk1 ST24 would be a good bit of fun too. Do it!

Elvis- Chip is giving you some solid advice here. I'd be repeating all he said really.
A track Mondy is a lame idea as mentioned.
If its a cheap track Ford, i would always say Puma or RS2000. My Mk4 Bonus was cool, took untold shit and was decent enough for a good giggle with just 128bhp. My other budget toy is my Puma 1.7. That's a good laugh too for the money, i very nearly got an RS2000 but went for the Puma as it came up for the right money at the right time. Not regretted it.

How much are you allowing out of his 5K budget for that bearing in mind I figure as a bare minimum the money he needs to spend elsewhere on making such a mondeo is:
400 quid to buy an appopriate colour base car
200 quid in stickers
1000 for wheels and tyres (1 set of wheels, 2 sets of tyres, 1 wet and 1 dry)
500 for suspension and brakes just for a really basic upgrade
400 for a cage
200 for seats and harnesses
100 for a basic extinguisher setup
So thats best part of 3K of the budget gone before you even start on the engine.
