Sorry If I have offended you,
I was going by service costs, insurance, sourcing parts for the 4.
Wanted a Evo 4 since last year but researched and realised I was'nt ready for the costs involved to keep them running, Knowing it will be driven hard used daily. To be honest it was the insurance costs that put me of.
A year later I'm now in a position to buy a Evo after gaining usefull advice from MLR.

i pay £680 inc commuting (only done occassionally), thats one thing that the sierra was cheaper for, that was only £400
personally i'd never buy an evo as a daily driver, nor any other performance car for that matter. thats why man invented diesels. ive got an a3 tdi for the daily 50mile commute.
PMSL
only you would be dumb enough to change plugs every 3k miles that engine prob never id 3k with me but yes it definately needed plugs towards the end of its time down here

like what? is it a tool you can make/buy yourself?
it wont be for a good while but im after an evo8 as the next car, which the wife would mainly use 70% of the time. 4500 miles would take about a year to do tho lol
and id rather diy service it.
so whats needed to change the fluid on the ayc?

cheers bud. found this:
Q: Does the AYC fluid have to be changed at a Mitsubishi Dealer?
A: According to the current service schedules for the Evo 4 onwards, the AYC fluid for the AYC clutch packs (ATFSP-III is now used as AYC fluid is no longer available) and the ATF fluid in the boot reservoir has to be changed every 4,500 miles (it has been suggested that Mitsubishi may extend this service interval for the AYC to 18,000 miles at a later date). Changing the AYC fluid in itself is not a problem. The problem comes when you change the ATF fluid in the hydraulic actuator system as you have to bleed the air out. The workshop manuals do state that the hydraulic system can be bled manually but it has been found that it can be difficult to get all of the air from the system using the manual method. The easiest way is to use the Mitsubishi MUT-II diagnostic tool, which is an electronic control box that plugs into the car for fault finding and servicing. The MUT-II has a program that operates the valves in the hydraulic system in the correct sequence so the air can be bled completely. Unfortunately the MUT-II is only available at Mitsubishi dealers or selected approved agents.
ok, so to bleed it correctly you need the mut thingy.
BUT how can mitsi just say that instead of every 4500 miles, you can change it every 18k lol

even if i had the tools and knowledge i wouldnt be doing it myself. it appears to me that many evo buyers (myself included) are willing to pay more for a car that has a FSH by professionals. mine came with either evo tuning garages (nr autosport and cpp) or mitsu themselves on the book and as its only had 26k when i got it i wanted to keep that up.
PMSL @ pic, not seen that before

fair enough if its a new car you want the s/h bang on. and tbh i would probably only buy one that did. afterwards tho i think im capable of an oil change every so many miles. but obv cant diy the ayc oil change. but if that can be done every 18k instead of 4.5k, then that would be about 4 years with the use it would get if we owned one.

i used to get my evo,s seviced at rg motorspot in newington, kent, who is well respected in the evo community and his service stamp is worth as much or probably more than the mitsi dealers.
for ayc oil change, engine oil change, and oil filter comes to about £130,aint a fortune is it.

£130 is reasonable.
I pay £200 ish for a service on my mr2 (jap motorsport specialist)
I prefer the evo 6 to the 7, but is the 7 worth the extra money for the newer car??

ayc fluid is every 9k not 4.5, and the rest is hardly just an oil change!

I have a Evo 5 and love it and has been the most reliable performance car i have ever owned
would deffo try and save the extra pennies and get a E5 over a 3 or a 4 as tuning is easier
and you manually bleed the AYC and no need for a MUT tool do a search on MLR
