Default Max Boost for T3

What is the Most boost you should run on a T3 in a Sapphire? Mine was running 17-18 PSI but i have just fitted a new cold side BOV and the boost has come up to 21-22 PSI. Is this okay or is this pushing it a bit far?

Mine is on 25psi according to the gauge (not sure how accurate it is) and sounds like it is about to shit itself and die

Altho to be fair, it was like that when I bought it

I ran 30 psi spike and dropping to 28 psi on my old 3DR......it was like that for a good 10,000 mile before i went for a T34....

When you say dropping to 28, do you mean that it was still at 28 at the limiter?

Cause if so that surely cant have been a standard turbo?

If the car is mapped correctly for it, you can run over 30psi on a T3 on a YB without a problem, but it will only do so in the midrange, it simply cant flow enough air to maintain that pressure once the engine is revving as it consumes the air quicker than the turbo can supply it at 30psi

Sorry Chip.

It spiked at 30 at about 2800rpm, then dropped to 28 psi..........then after about 5k it dropped slowly to around 18psi i think........

It was about 5 years ago

Sounds exactly like Doug Stirlings old silver saph on a Karl Norris "gunship" style setup.

That went fantastically well as a road car, if you were alongside him on the motorway in a T38 powered car and both put your foot down in 5th without changing down, he was well ahead by the time the T38 car got going

Really really nice setup that if you just want an effortlessly fast car without all the revs and drama of a big power car.

Ultimately always going to lose out to a T34 in true performance stakes though due to that lack of flow at the top end.

Taking the thread a tad offtopic, but how much boost can a 360bearing T3 handle ?

My 3dr and Popeye's 3DR were the test cars for Karls chip years ago........And it was me that gave it the name "Gunship"

Performance Ford did a 6 page grudge match with them at the time as people didnt belive that they could do the times/power that was being talked about

So thats why it sounds likes dougs set-up

Where in NZ are you mate? Your local hoody wearing bros won't know what hit them in their 6psi Turbo VTEC's if you use 22psi on a YB

Any pics of the Cossie?

Iv heard alot about this Gunship setup by Karl, iv got a standard(i think) 2wd Sapph with 42,000 on the clock good strong engine, gaerbox, diff just had a head gasket(group A) on her, would this be a nice upgrade for the car with out wanting to change anything dramatically???

Any one know what he changes for Stage 1 gunship??

That looks like the best Cossie I have seen in NZ. Looks great mate. Certainly looks better than all the Jap shite you see down here.

Send pics to me and I will post if you wish barry@databusters.co.uk.

Blimey, you only posted that 28 mins a go, give people a chance

As far as im aware he raises the fuel pressure, and all components such as turbo and injectors stay standard, so no visible differences, but give Karl a ring and ask him.

the gunships stage 1 i think still retains the standard yellow injectors, so that's a big bonus

you will need a new -31 actuator, and a 4x4 intercooler IMO (they look standard if thats what your are worried about)

the turbo will need to be in good condition too, and it really needs a 360 degree bearing.

if your worried about it looking non standard, then i would fit a K&N or decent panel filter rather than going for a cone filter

hope that helps
Matt

There is a need to differentiate here between the terms COULD and SHOULD, the higher you run it at the more likely it will last 5 mins before destroying itself. In your initial q you asked what boost it should run be run at. I hope from the answers above you can make a reasonable compromise, but around 20 psi doesn't seem to over enthusiastic. I've seen mine hit 30psi peak aswell, but then one day the bearing collapsed and the turbo was scrap.

The thing with Mark's and myselves cars was they were the test mules for Karl, and i know I ( can't speak for mark ) was prepared to push the car to the limits with regards to if it pops it pops.
Not sure how many hours Tiff had spent on his, i'm sure it was alot more than mine as he lived closer to than me, but i had about 20 hours in total spent on mine with karl.
Ps mine ran a complete 4wd engine

Boost isnt want tends to kill a turbo directly, its shaft speed, by only running the big boost in the midrange where the airflow is less, you can prevent excessive shaft speeds.

Cheers again guys. The car seems to be boosting up to 22psi - never over, then settling in at 20psi through the mid range before running out of puff at about 6000 RPM where it is coming back to 18psi.

Like The old man Pops has said.......when our cars were being tested we were told that it may all go wrong, but we didnt mind. Thats part and parcel of testing.

But all in all, IMHO its THE BEST road going conversion for the Cosworth engine
