you can pick up an E36 325 for about 500 quid if you look hard enough, weld the diff, get the bbtb + induction kit and you have a 200ish hp arse happy drift machine !

I've been wondering about this. One of my mates has one, and it has some annoying stability program that can't be turned off according to him? Is that right?

My e36 325i drift car doesn't have, and didn't come with, any kind of traction control whatsoever.
For £1000 you'd get a better e36 325i than e30 325i, in my experience. I went for a BMW rather than an S13 when searching for a cheap drift car as I didn't want to worry about the turbo, and so was faced with the e36 or e30 dilemma. You seem to only get only really nice e30 325i (mainly M-tech2's) that go for big money or really sheddy e30 325i that will probably be too much hassle than they're worth.

the 200sx is a very good drifter from the off with enough power etc.
ok mine wasnt the best example but at £600 i just didnt give a fuck. if i crashed, who cares etc...
thats what id do again if i was aftet a cheapo drifter. maybe try and get one thats had a bit done tho, not a bog std one.
ckeck out the sxoc/driftworks

Too many posts.. I need a life!!
S13s are cheap to start off with, but dont last, for the money your gonna get high miles rotters that u gotta worry about doing turbo gaskets on and the bottom end going which is common with the CA18 det.
E30 and E36 have a good balance and welded diff sets you off for instant fun.

Btw, if you look for an E30 325, go for a 'touring' as they have a much better diff ( similar to M3 iirc ? )
You can always turn off stability programs too - you just have to know how !!

I do vaguely remember my bro saying about this a while back, it has something to do with the type of diff the car is fitted with.

As for the e30 325 Touring, a lot of them came with a 3.91 ratio LSD ( like the later Sports ) rather than the 'longer' ( by longer I mean smaller number like a 3.64 etc ) open diffs of ordinary E30 325s so that maybe what you are thinking of? You can have a look at the diff tag and it might give you a clue as to the ration and whether it's a LSD ( tag will have an 'S' by the ratio but don't take it as gospel as there are unscrupulous people out there )

I won't spend £1000 on your first drift car. Just get the cheapest RWD car you can lay your hands and weld the diff, then go and learn to drift.
If you did want to spend £1000, have a look on trampdrift or driftworks for one that has already been played with to make it easier to drift (Like Nick suggested).

Depends what age it is. I had a 1993 325i that had now traction control at all and my mate had a slightly newer, maybe 1996 323i that had traction control.
323i/325i would be a good choice imo. induction kit and a bbtb mod and its over 200bhp, weld the diff, strip it and it will drift alright i'd imagine.

IMHO you don't need alot of power to drift. When you start off, you will benefit from learning in something low powered as you have to be fully committed and you can't use power to mask being a pussy. When you do progress on to something more powerful you will be a hell of alot better than someone who started off drifting something relatively powerful.

That's what I did quite a few years ago but they are very very hard to find these days because they got scrapped when the rear arches and behind the kit rotted it Shame because despite their size they are great fun to drive

I also would say a volvo 340/360.
Can get a decent one for Cheap, renault engines can be fitted easily ie valver or williams lump. Strip it, add a bucket seat, weld the diff.

only thing i found is if you can drift a crappy ol 325 you properly you can drift most rwd's, if you learn with a 200sx drifting things non turbo and less stiff gets tricky and you start to hate yourself thinking you've lost some skill somewhere, lol
buy a 200sx indeed

Volvos dont drive anything like as well as a 200sx, the suspension geometry isnt as good, the parts arent as readily available, they are great if you want a really cheap drift car for a couple of hundred quid to practice with but if you have a grand to spend it would be much better spent on a 200sx and then you dont have to do engine conversions etc

Buy a £300 Transit and get yourself out in the rain, its great fun and something I have enjoyed doing the past 2 years Ive had mine. A turn and a half of opposite lock is a bit scary in a Transit at times

Would be worried that wouldn't last as long as a BMW?
Fancy picking up a cheap drift car of some description though. Got my trailer license last week, so can now pick up these heaps of junk without having to insure them for the road or having to risk the drive back in something that could break down.

if you can get an s13 200sx get that, proven world famous drift car
and tons and tons you can do to it
imo an n/a engine would be good to use to start drifting in
