Default Buying An Escos For 10K **Good Idea?**

Right guys i need some help and advice if possible.

My saff is currently undergoing an engine rebuild but i am now in a position to be able to buy a car for 10K, i have the money in cash and im really in two minds what to get.

Ive owned a lot of different cars and have been there and done the M5 M3 fq340 Sti etc etc.

I have never owned a 3 door and i have never owned an escos.

Now as a few of you may know my dream car ever since i was a very young lad was an escort cosworth and now i can buy one I feel that i dont want to.

You may wonder am i mad but the reason i have my reservations is because everybody advises me that a dream should stay a dream, as the reality of an escos is not all its cracked up to be.

The reliability issue is not a problem for me as it would only be a weekend thing.

I would like some views on this but i think my main questions are.

Can you get an escos worth having for 10K?
Is it better getting a mint 3 door than an escos.

Ps. i know a few of you are going to suggest the black one on here but i want a proper one and not a motorsport edition (or whatever people call them) etc etc etc....

I dont mind a bit of work as i would prefer it to be mine and not just someone elses.

Peoples view on this would be great, if i need to get more money i can, I also may sell the saff once its rebuilt to fund one.

What do you think???

I dont really want to turn the thread into highlighting why i havnt bought guzzlers car as that may hurt his sale.

I have heard of motorsports editions but l am not oracle on the subject, you have to satisfy your desires at some stage so get one even if you move it on in a few years at least you have had one

there is a factory dealer supplied Motorsport (AS WELL AS a motorsport shell that could be built up)

dont let anyone put you off because of that.

If it was any other escos i'd get a 3dr for your budget but Matt is a VERY straight down the line bloke when it comes to cars. You will regret not going for that one with your budget while you have the chance IMHO.

edited because I have found the original FORD brochure with teh motorsport details

You deffo can get motorsports there is quite a few of them kicking about, that one Guzzler has for sale looks like a really good car for the money being asked for it.

I bought a standard Escos Big turbo example last year, to be honest its not really what I thought it was going to be. had the looks deffonetly a eyecatcher, but did not have the go that I was expecting.
Ended up selling. I think it would have been better for me to get a 3door to be honest.

IIRC the Motorsports were just called ''Escort Cosworth's'' not ''Escort RS Cosworth''

10k Escos...you get what you paid for, Don't suspect a minter, you'd get a good used Escos like a Motorsport for that!

TBh...if i had 10k to spend on a escos, id wanna buy Matt's & strip it out, Fast Road/Track car!

Not really up for a track car to be honest...

All im thinking is buy guzzlers 10k

then leather 1k

then leccy windows bits to buy surely gonna cost atleast 200 and i dont know how to fit.

same for the mirrors.

openeing rear windows...

thats without both front arches needing doing and front bumper

etc etc, at 10 k it just makes me thing to buy a lux for 13k.

dont get me wrong it looks nice but pictures always do. im just worried everyone will say oh yeah its just a motorsport one.

2 months ago i could have bought an aubergine lux for 9k but i didnt have the cash.

Would only 1 of you go for a 3 door?

Sounds like you don't want a ''budget'' Escos you want the Lux pack!

Just get a 3dr...you'd get a good one for 10k! Look at that minter Linfoot had a few weeks ago for ALOT less than 10k!

i consider it my realistic dream car.

My actual dream car is a F430 scuderia thing.

Or a zonda.

But not going to happen so this is my reality.

If you want a LUX then buy one, dont try and build one from a motorsport, and I would recomend saving a few more K first to get a good one, it will be cheaper to own in the long run I reckon.

We are taking the car to the Uxbridge Autoshow on Sunday, it will be displayed there for sale, its up for under 10k now, if its not sold soon then its going to be kept in the garage i think until next year and we'll see what happens as its not a give away its a VERY good car for the money.

I need an everyday car for me hence the sale in the first place, im thinking of taking the escos off the road and just getting a cheap runabout for now and selling the car later with no urgency.

The above would have been small turbo you would have got fed up with it in no time then the 9k car would turn into a 13k car by the time you converted it or ended up a project i can assure you.

Generally speaking with any car, you decide on the spec you want it to be, and buy the closest thing you can find to that, it will cost more to convert a ST to a LT than the difference etc.

looks like your talking to people who really know their stuff
i keep getting cocks telling that motorsports only came in white on Q plate if people don't know what there talking about then why comment

to drive, an escos dosn't feel that different to a 4x4 saff, just more iconic if you like driving M3's 5's etc then you will probably be dissapointed with an escos (unless you liked the 4x4 saff)
the one thing with an escos is that it won't change a great deal in value!

as for trim etc, there was a leather trim on here for Ł500 a few weeks back or a cloth one for Ł300, windows could be obtained from any 3 door mk5 or 6 escort, all the loom plugs shoule be ready to plug in, opening quarters normally go for around Ł150-200

i'm sure if someone else advertised this car they wouldn't point out any problem areas & advertise it as 'mint'

only you can decide if you want an escos or 3 door.

but i think this is a very nice car for the money https://passionford.com/forum/cars-f...te-3-door.html (although it needs different wheels)

If i had the choice of a Ł10k escos and a Ł10k 3 door i would go for the 3 door everytime!

Not talking specifically about the motorspirt one mentioned but generally speaking, a Ł10k esocs will turn into a Ł12k-Ł13k+ before you get it how you want it. But then again it depends how picky you are i suppose. Many people are happy to buy one for Ł10k and use it as it is and fair play.

If you can afford to pay more and definatly want an escos, then get the best one you can afford that needs nothing/little doing to it. You will benefit in the long run for sure.

Also dont expect too much from it though. It will be more or less the same as your 4x4 to drive as said, but you will feel much better driving it as it has sooooo much road presence when compared to a saff.

So for me, if you only want to spend Ł10k, get a decent 3 door, if your prepared to pay more, get a half decent escos for Ł13k-Ł15k. All in my opinion of course.

That does look a really nice car. Youre right about the wheels though lol.

Guzzler i probably am talking to the wrong people if im honest, Im just worried about people considering it not to be a proper escort cosworth. Im obviosly not the only one that thinks that due to the comments people make about motorsport edition escorts. (and possibly the fact that its not sold yet)

Everybody speaks very highly of you so im sure its a nice car im just not sure i could live with the sarky comments.

has anyone on here bought a 10K escort and had any experiences. There are 3 or 4 advertised on PH at that money at the moment but the nicest one seems to be a CAT D.

how uncontrollable is 400HP 3 door in the wet?

very constructive mate....

Im starting to think the 3 door route myself, The escort must handle better than the saff though surely, Not so boaty etc etc.

you can get pretty nice ones at the moment for 12k I could just wait or sell the saff and my runner and have 17k to play with.

Problem is im not one of these that will go and by 17ks worth of escort, i want to have it how i like it using people i now trust to work on it so id rather buy a 12k one and spend 5k on it. etc etc.

its a tough one, but as already said, only you can make the decision, for me too, my dream is to have an escos, but doing it on a budget isn't part of the dream to be honest, you should always buy the best you can.

no disrespect to guzzler, does look like a good car and from what has been already said is a good car, just depends what you want, and by the sound of things, you want a 10k car, but your gonna wanna spend another 2-3k making it what you want..... so, as already said, buy what you really want, and not what isn't quite what you want.......

this is what i would do in your position, i would go look for a mint 3door, as your not gonna be doing big mileage, so its never gonna depreciate, then when your 4x4 saff is finished, you need to decide whether you like the rear drive or 4x4, then, if its 4x4 you have a mint 3door and a freshly rebuilt saff to move on and you will have a decent amount of wonga for the escos you really want......

i think that is your best plan, then you will be able to compare the two and make a decision whether to make the next step to escos...

for me things are a little different, as i use my RS everyday, so an escos isn't the most ideal candidate, so it will have to wait a while for me, so i'm looking at mk1 focus RS and possibly saffs for my next move

anyways, hope this helps you pal

errr more like the MANY threads that have appeared on here of either Q or R platers with no sun roofs that are deffinatley dodgey to say the least(plus lack of knowledge)....but a proper motorsport version isn't a risk in the slightest! Like i said before,i saw my friend hand over the cash when he bought his new from Ford....i don't think they were ringing or selling suspect shells then!!...and come on,does anyone think Guzzler would own a suspect RS?....from what i'm led to believe,he knows his stuff! Its all really down to,do you want a clean motorsport version at 10k(bragain IMO) or pay 2-3k more for a LUX version in the same condition?
