Canoe or Kayak? Where would you be using it? Fast flowing rivers you'd want something small and with a flat underside, whereas on a lake you'd want one with a round underside for stability etc.

He used to surf kayak for England - get it right James!!!!
Doug, you do realise that you have to have a license to kayak most rivers. Before you start, I would suggest you under take your exams, ie one, two or three star, depending on your experience. They can also teach you how to read the river conditions.
I am a two star but I had an accident a few years ago in the sea, ie I capsized and got stuck and havent gone back to it since!!!
Happy to answer any questions. Nik

Sorry!!!! Just dont want you to get fined or hurt!!! I panicked and passed out in my accident and could have easily drowned if my brother hadnt rescued me when he did and I had been kayaking for several years.
I will stop now.

Been looking at these
Key Features:
2 Sizes
• Stable and forgiving displacement hull
• Great initial stability and easy edge control
• Rounded deck and side wall shape assist rolling
• Ergonomic outfitting in a range of specifications
Can get it brand new for £365
River medway licence is £23
or a BCU licence is only £34 a year and you get 3rd party insurance and 10 free magazines a year too

You should join your local canoeing club if there is one, and the BCU would be a good idea. You can then learn how to handle a canoe/kayak and paddle safely, not on your own idealy.
Generally Kayaks are closed cockpit, where you use a spraydeck (like the Dagger above). Canoes are the large open type (like the red indians used).
If you intend to paddle on your own (not on white water) i would strongly advise you take lessons/join a group and get to at least 3 Star levelas this is the level i take as competent. You want to get to a skill levle where you can self rescue (Eskimo roll).
I gained my 4 Star about 15 yrs ago and became an Instructor (Level 2 coach), i've also done lots of slalom canoeing to Division 2 level, and have paddled the Nottingham course like used in the recent Eurpopean Slalom Championships.
