Default cars for under a grand

seeing as someones ex was ripped off by her brother over a shitty little corsa has got me thinking

i've got probably the thick end of a grand to spend on a small car, but not a corsa and the main requirements are that it's got power steering and 5 doors

the usual suspects are fiesta, micra type things, with a pinch of 106 throw in for good measure, but these don't tend to have power steering

so, anyone else got any other suggestions for a small shopping car?

and what will a grand buy me? how new?

i'm sure that i could get lots of motor for my money, but it's all the wrong sorts of motor, too big and too heavy on the juice as well as expensive to put right if it's broken and insurance being a twat too so small sensible transport suggestions please

306 is too big, plus the neighbour had one and wasn't impressed

plus a mate had one and the build quality was shocking shit but i'll stick with it being too big for he mrs to drive even though the economy is great

the fiesta looks like a good buy, but no answer on the phone number for me

Fiesta mk4/5 1.25/1.4 zetec would be ideal, would have power steering, electric windows etc etc, nice, simple cheap cars

stay away from the mk4, horribly shocking to drive, sound broken from new and just generally cheap and nasty. How anyone can own one and say anything french is bad is beyond me

Oh come on, they're not that bad. Granted its very, very, very plasticy in there but that little 1.25 is a stonker for what it is (avid the 1300 pushrod piece of shit). Seats are good too imho.
Won awards for handling too back in the day - same 'bones' as the puma and no-one slags them (despite the uber gay looks).

A 106GTI would be a riot. Yeah its based on a saxo, its gonna rust and fall apart and the electrics wont work but it'll be fun while it lasts.
Wont lose any money either - just flog it to a local chav when stuff starts failing.

It was a 1300 I drove on an x plate and it was genuinely terrible, like scarily shit (dealer serviced from new, fresh mot) it was actually worse than a 1200 corsa on standard suspension and thats saying something.

personally, any small car bought for a grand is going to be shit and if someone cant manage something the size of a 306 they shouldnt be on the road (thats as scary as the fiesta posted above) so Id be going 306 derv but in very small cars, Id actually seriously consider the saxo and if not that then an early corsa sri, polo etc.

on a sidenote, how that 1300 survived for so long ill never know, it was a dreadful engine when it was released and fittingit to fiestas and kas didnt make it any better

personal preferance on the 306, seeing as i want a small car not a medium sized one

if i did i'd be looking at getting a mk1 focus

so the fiesta it is then, looksl ike there are a few that are nice out there in the internet so i might just get buying, do you think i will get a good trade in and then they could give me a grand back

lol. I've got one in my escort - I put it there as the CVH was shagged. I was desperate. And yes, its shit.

Concur with the 306. King of small cars. Nothing else comes close. HDI is the daddy but for a grand you'll have to put up with the 1.9 XUD.
I'm not sure a 306 is much bigger than a Fiesta ??

I looked at a Mondeo on a 51 plate that is advertsied up the road from me, just parked up with a sticker in the window.

Its a tidy car, 1.8 LX but it is LPG......................

£795 in the window...............i had him at £625 within 20 minutes, But i only wanted to pay £600

Its still there so i may pop down and take it for the sake of £25.......lol

for 1k, i would personnaly buy something with a slight knock, cat D, that will need a bonnet, or a wing to put back on the road, you can get some real bargains in the salvage yards

Well i would say a mk 4 fiesta 1,25 16V they are a nippy little car and they go well for a 1.25.I think they handle really well too, they are like a go cart. The 1.1 and 1.3 ohv engines are good but not as pokey as the 1.25 16V.

MK4 fiesta 1.25 16v

Cheap as chips, engine and box are smooth, lots of unmolested examples around. Not going to set the world on fire but a less tinny car than it's rivals at that size and pretty reliable.

My misses mums has done over 100k and sails the mot's needing no more than ball joints.

mk4 fiesta all the way mate, the 1.25 zetecs are gems of engines and are pretty nippy. Parts are dirt cheap if needed (very reliable i've had 4) and a well specced one makes for a great wee runabout - got one myself

thanks for the offer mate but we are after a small car, simply because it's much easier to park, cheap to insure, not worried about it getting knocked and easier to turn around in the limited space we got rather than have to reverse down the drive and not be able to swing it at the other end
