Default How to change a cambelt....

I am on a mission at the moment on the clio, i have brought a gearbox and clutch which me and my mate are sticking in on Tuesday but..... the car is also loosing water, its not got any puddles, no smeg etc, sooo im going for water pump on its way out (French build quality rules!)
So obviously i will change the cambelt at the same time but is the cambelt simple enough to change? i am mechanicly-ish minded, do u have to lock the pulleys up then ur away with just changing the belt? or is there a whole lot more too it and i should leave it to my mechanic mate?,

Cheers Adam

pretty easy to do; just need a methodical approach and your halfway there, not sure what the tensioner is like to do on them but do that at the same time

get a diagram from a renault site and see what you reckon

its not difficult, just take your time and dont rush

once you've done it; turn it over by hand to make sure everything is tip top

Turn it over by hand in both directions to make sure nothing slips...or sticks.

tbh if you arent sure you best get a mechanic to do it, ive had to repair jobs from diy mechanics were they have got it wrong, and when it goes wrong with a cambelt it can be quite expensive

just don't do it with the belt off mind

line up the marks, remove the belt
change the water pump
put the belt back on again
tension
turn the engine over several times with a socket to see if everything still lines up the way it should and hasn't moved
make sure you check that the tensions and pump are tight
job done

don't get the belt greasy or wet though

Total mission on a 1.8 16v clio.

Personally I bought a spare engine for 50 quid, so when my cambelt eventually fails I will just whack that in cause it will take less time than changing the belt

alright mate, when i do a belt i normally mark the cam pulleys with a paint pen once you have set it to TDC.

what he said

the sproket on the crank is half the size of the cam sprockets, due to the crank rotating twice for every rotation of the cam/s

so you need to find top dead centre, which is where the #1 piston is at the top of the stroke, but due to there being a dwell on the top of the stroke the timing marks allow you to align everything up correctly top and bottom
