What exctly is the process of shot peening and how much does it cost?

You blast your rods or whatever your doing with tiny bits of shot (could be a number of differing materials.) the impact alters the surface if the material by work hardening it in the form of making the surface grains smaller. You could of course have altered the dendritic grain growth (oooh technical bit!) during manufacture by using differing cooling rates but shot peening or shot blasting gives the material surface more strength. Its cheap too.
